Sea Kings win in overtime

Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team was forced into

overtime by Foothill in a nonleague match Friday, then took it out on

the Knights with a four-goal overtime explosion to capture an 11-7

decision in the winner’s pool.

Artie Dorr led the way with four goals, and David DiRocco, Jason

DiRocco and John Money each scored twice. John Mann had one goal.

Beau Stockstill was credited with 16 saves as Corona del Mar

improved to 2-1.

Newport Harbor High’s Sailors swept past their first two pool foes

in the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament Friday, and meet Santa Margarita

today at 8 a.m., with results dictating where and when they’ll

continue later today.

Elizabeth Clayton led the way with eight kills in a 15-8, 15-9

victory over El Dorado, then Alyson Jennings (nine kills) was the

ringleader in an uphill 15-13, 12-15, 17-15 victory over Redlands.

Redlands had a 9-3 lead in the deciding rally game before the Sailors

(3-0) turned it on.

CROSS COUNTRY: OCC sparkles

Orange Coast College’s men’s and women’s cross country teams swept

the opposition away on Friday at the Orange Empire Conference Preview

Meet, the men sharing the crown with Santa Ana, and the women’s

posting a first-place finish.

The Pirates’ men, as well as Santa Ana, scored 44 points, led by

the efforts of David Ojeda (fifth at 21:04.49), backed up by Sam

Ocampo (eighth at 21:17.78), Vidal Barragan (10th at 21:26.79),

Gilbert Sales (12th at 21:43.60), Irwin Salas (13th at 21:43.93),

Mike Casillas (15th at 21:44.86), Andrew Brown (17th at 22:00.02),

Juan Altamirano (18th at 22:05.51), Kohyar Naderi (19th at 22:09.91)

and Peter Ramirez (22nd at 22:27.76).

The women’s team dominated, with the 1-2 finish of Michelle Icban

and Ava Jones, the two recording times of 18:53.6l8 and 18:55.09,

respectively.

Leading a pack at 7 was Susie Dinoso (20:10.00, followed by

Roseann Peters (20:23.85), Natalie St. Andrew (20:29.39) and Sandra

Montoya (11th at 20:41.81).

Natalie Elliott and Shea Cobin went 18-19 with times of 21:42.50

and 21:45.18, and Jane Alder (22:02.88, Jasmine Gdider (22:18.20),

Hanni Geider (22:19.41), Katie Stretz (22:28.20) and Claudia Sanchez

(23:36.25) distinguished themselves.

SOCCER: OCC women fall, 2-1

Orange Coast College’s women’s soccer team jumped to a 1-0 lead

early when Lauren Cassity scored on a 30-yard direct kick, the first

goal of the season scored on the state’s No. 2-ranked Cypress

Chargers.

Cypress, however, rallied with a goal in the 29th minute on a goal

by Cynthia Pinkney off a Randi Johns assist, and Julie Lloyd scored

the game-winner in the 77th minute from the top of the box after

taking a feed from Sadye Reish.

Margaret Landeros of OCC was credited with 14 saves. Jackie James

of Cypress fended off four OCC shots.

Cypress improves to 7-0, 2-0 in the Orange Empire Conference. The

Pirates fall to 6-1, 2-1.

The victory increased Cypress’ unbeaten streak to 78 in a row

(73-0-5).

SOCCER: UCI women fall, 2-0

UC Irvine’s women’s water polo team was a 2-0 loser against

Portland in the first round of the Nike Invitational in Seattle

Friday.

The Anteaters, now 2-3, were outshot, 26-7, and Portland had eight

corner kicks to UCI’s none.

UCI goalies Sarah Swancutt and Chelsea McCarthy had three and six

saves, respectively.

Portland improves to 6-2.

YOUTH BASEBALL: Mesa rolling

ORANGE -- With help from a stellar defensive play, the Costa Mesa

Pony A’s opened the winter baseball season with a 10-7 win over host

Orange.

With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh,

right fielder Daniel Stelle made an over-the-shoulder catch and threw

to first baseman Luke Ott to double off the baserunner to end the

game.

Matt Pisarski pitched two innings and struck out five while Andrew

Millian threw two innings and struck out three.

Philip Weber led the offense with three hits and three RBIs while

Cody Spoulos collected two hits and an RBI with Pisarski, Andy Dawson

and Stelle each adding hits and RBIs.

JR. ALL-AMERICAN: Seahawks

MISSION VIEJO -- The rout was on for the Jr. Midget Seahawks as

they used four touchdowns by halfback Jacob Gildart and a smothering

defense to beat the host Mission Viejo Cowboys, 28-8.

Gildart scored one of his TD’s after a 35-yard pass from Taylor

Sepulveda to Jamie McGee as Sepulveda also connected with Jonathon

Tripi on several key receptions.

The Seahawk defense came to play with Robbie Lusk’s 15-yard

interception return and Matt Lutton’s strong performance on the

defensive line along with standout performances by linebackers Eric

Rask and Charles Vickery, cornerback Tommy Folks along with Charles

Orrison and Jonathan Honse.

Richie Sorenson, Brett Houten and Brice Stillman led the offense.

Seahawks 30, M. Viejo Cowboys 0

Carlo Valdez scored two touchdowns and Andrew McDonald returned an

interception 60 yards for a score to highlight the Seahawks rout of

Mission Viejo at Bonita Creek Park in Newport Beach.

First-year quarterback Matt Barkley connected with tight end Max

Stiegler for a 40-yard TD as Valdez received strong blocking from

David Kidishian, Scott Lineback, James McKennon, Scott Simon and Jeff

Yokoyama.

The defense was led by solid tackling from Nick Svendsen, Robbie

Boyer and Brandon Davis.

* In Clinic (8-10 year-olds) action:

La Mirada Matadors 39, Seahawks 0

The Seahawks committed three fumbles and had an on-side kick

recovered by the Matadors in the Seahawks’ loss at La Mirada.

The Seahawks trailed 6-0 with 15 seconds left in the first half

when the Matadors scored their second touchdown after a penalty put

the ball on the Seahawk 3-yard line.

The Seahawks played tough with Mark Contreras running 10 times for

127 yards and Parker Norton adding five carries for 63 yards and a

key interception to stop a La Mirada drive.

Elizabeth Eddy ran the ball well for the Seahawks and Michael

Taormina played solidly on both sides of the ball.

The Seahawks hope to have Ryan Iverson back this week after being

sidelined with a broken finger.

* In Junior Clinic (7-and 8-year-olds)

The Junior Clinic Seahawks fell to an older, faster and bigger

Inglewood Generals team who scored 19 points in the first half.

But the Seahawks received a strong running performance by Hunter

Durante (25 yards) and Arron Crosby, who nearly broke his first carry

for a long gain.

Albert Daniel made three tackles behind the line of scrimmage as

linebacker Jake Hall delivered several jarring hits.

The Seahawks also received solid tackling in the fourth quarter

from Tim Kelly, Crosby, Troy Reese and Chance Beauchamp. Michael

Favreau and Kellon Truxton also made strong defensive plays.

Playing in his first game Saturday, Mario Rosales delivered solid

blocking for the Seahawks’ offensive line and played well on defense.
