Even though Corona del Mar’s boys and girls cross country teams
call CIF Southern Section Division III home, they both showcased
their talent in winning their Division II races Saturday at the Sunny
Hills Invitational at Craig Park.
The girls team, ranked No. 1 in Division III and the boys team,
ranked seventh in Division III, blitzed foes on the three-mile
course.
“We had a pretty good day, we did very well,” said CdM Coach Bill
Sumner.
Senior Becky Cummins led the girls charge with the fourth-best
time of the day, winning her individual race by 100 yards with an
18:39 followed by Keelan Cuyler’s 19:35 and Taryn Kawata’s 20:16.
Ahlia Kattan finished in 20:31 while sophomore Melissa Swigert ran
to a 20:51, followed by Jennifer Logan (21:11) and Devon Ahearn
(21:46).
“Becky had a great performance and is looking forward to Stanford
next week,” Sumner said, alluding to his team’s participation at the
Stanford Invitational.
On the boys side, senior Blake Dillion ran to a fifth-place finish
overall at 16:40, one of his best times since late last season,
Sumner said. Dillion was followed by senior Bo Widener’s 16:56 and
junior J.C. Turner, who came in at 17:03.
Junior Kevin Artz finished at 17:19 as junior Danny Quinlan ran to
a 17:23 followed by freshman Jack Turner (17:25) and junior Brandon
Borcoman (17:33), to lead the Sea Kings over 24 teams that included
Artesia, Servite, Rosary and Lakewood.
Senior Mike Rudinica, who Sumner said was a solid top-three runner
in the summer, had to leave the race at the 1 1/2-mile mark when he
suffered a shin injury.
