Spartans edge UCI
ANTEATER STADIUM -- San Jose State’s Trevor Harris scored on a
breakaway in the 73rd minute to lead the visiting Spartans to a 1-0
nonconference men’s soccer victory over UC Irvine Sunday.
Neither team managed a shot on net in the first half and Anteater
goalie Cameron Rossi finished with just one save as UCI fell to
4-2-1.
San Jose State’s Eddie Dominguez made three saves for the
visitors, who were outshot by the Anteaters, 17-7.
Dardo Acuna paced the UCI attack with four shots, while Joel
Spencer fired three and David Yumane and Sean Iliff each added two
for the Anteaters.
San Jose State improved to 3-4.
UCI returns to action Wednesday might, when it hosts the Toreros
from the University of San Diego.
SOCCER: HUSKIES BLANK UCI
SEATTLE -- Host Washington scored two goals in the opening 14
minutes and cruised to a 3-0 triumph to capture the title of the
Husky/Nike Invitational women’s soccer tournament Sunday in front of
1,173 at Husky Soccer Field.
Jaime Carstensen opened the scoring for Washington, poking in a
15-foot shot after Tina Frimpong relayed a Melissa Bennett corner
kick to her 9:51 into the contest.
The second goal was a 25-yard blast by redshirt freshman Kim
Taylor in the 14th minute, after Taylor stole the ball from an
Anteater defender.
Sara Davis finalized the scoring in the 36th minute. A Bennett
corner kick to the far post was headed to Davis by teammate Clare
Rustad, allowing Davis to cash in about 10 yards in front.
Sarah Swancutt and Chelsea McCarthy each played a half in goal for
the visitors, with Swancutt collecting four of the Anteaters’ five
assists.
The Anteaters, who were outshot, 12-9, fell to 2-4, while
Washington improved to 5-2-1.
Hayley McNallan had four shots to spearhead the UCI attack, which
included three shots from Kim Lloyd.
Hope Solo made three saves for the Huskies, who had five corner
kicks to the Anteaters’ one.
MEN’S POLO: USC EDGES ‘EATERS
LOS ANGELES -- Gadi Hadar scored with 1:14 left to boost sixth-ranked USC past No. 2-ranked UC Irvine, 8-7, in nonconference
men’s water polo action Sunday at McDonald’s Swim Stadium.
Hadar’s goal completed a Trojan comeback from a 7-5 fourth-quarter
deficit.
UCI senior Jeff Powers, who scored a game-high four goals, gave
UCI the 7-5 cushion on an extra-man goal with 4:48 left.
USC, however, countered with goals by Jeff Larson, Jordan Hewko
and Hadar to drop the Anteaters to 5-2.
Dreason Barry had two goals and senior goalie Doug Finfrock
recorded 11 saves for UCI.
USC (8-2) received two goals from Stephen Lipinski and one goal
from six others. Bozidar Damjanovic made six saves for the Trojans.
UCI hosts seventh-ranked Pepperdine Thursday at 7 p.m. at the
Anteater Aquatics Complex.

WOMEN’S POLO: OCC IS SECOND
PLEASANT HILL -- The short-handed Orange Coast College women’s
water polo team dropped a 10-4 decision to Merced in the title game
of the Diablo Valley College Tournament Sunday.
Erica Nicholson, who scored five goals in OCC victories over
Foothill, 15-1, and Modesto, 12-1, Saturday, was cut on the eyebrow
on the outside of her left eye early Sunday’s 7-5 semifinal win over
Cuesta and missed the title game, after receiving five stitches at a
local hospital.
OCC goalie Heather Deyden also missed the first quarter of the
title match, before finishing up and collecting nine saves.
Merced’s victory avenged an earlier 6-4 loss to OCC in the Cypress
Tournament, where the Pirates also finished second.
OCC (8-2) is expected to be without Nicholson Wednesday when it
returns to Orange Empire Conference action at Cypress.

TENNIS: HIPPENSTEEL NETS TITLE
COSTA MESA -- Former Stanford star K.J. Hippensteel earned a 6-3,
6-4 tennis victory over fellow American Marc Silva Sunday to claim
the singles title at the Diadora Pro Championships at the Costa Mesa
Tennis Center.
It was the third straight-set victory in four tournament matches
for the unseeded Hippensteel, who advanced to the final with a 4-6,
6-1, 7-6 semifinal win Saturday over Zack Fleishman.
In Sunday’s doubles final, Oskar Johansson of Sweden teamed with
New Zealand’s James Shorthall to earn a 7-6, 6-2 victory over
Americans Prakash Amritraj and Rajeev Ram.
