ON THE AGENDA

AIRPORT EDUCATION GRANT

A report about expenditures by the Airport Working Group and

Citizens for Jobs and the Economy will be the subject of a scheduled

discussion tonight at 8 p.m. The discussion, which will take place

during the regular council meeting, will let council members and

community members examine the groups’ spending of a $3.6-million

grant from the city.

WHAT TO EXPECT

City Councilman John Heffernan said last week that he plans to

bring up the issue of how such grants are awarded and whether

competitive bidding should be part of the process. It’s possible that

a lot of other people will have opinions to share on the grant, as

well.

CELLULAR ANTENNAS

A long-simmering discussion on wireless antennas in the city has

finally taken form as two proposed actions. Council members will take

their first formal action tonight on two items regarding cellular

antennas in the city. The first is an ordinance to govern where,

when, how and which antennas can be installed on commercial property.

The second is a policy that would let the city profit from leasing

its own space to cellular companies as sites for their antennas.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The proposed ordinance and policy are the result of extensive

study by council members and city staff. As a result, a lot of the

“what ifs” have already been addressed. Therefore, it’s possible that

the first reading will move forward with little controversy. If

council members approve the two items in front of them tonight, they

will come back for a final vote at the next council meeting.

REAL ESTATE SIGNS

Right now, if a real estate company hangs a little sign off a

bigger sign, perhaps one that says “sold” or “in escrow,” or if they

want to put a box of brochures on the sign’s post, they are likely

violating a city ordinance. That’s because city guidelines require

that signs not exceed a certain square footage, which varies

depending on the type of sign. An ordinance before council members

tonight could change that. The proposed ordinance would allow real

estate sales people to add small “rider” signs or brochure boxes.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Because the item is on the consent calendar, chances are it won’t

be too controversial.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

Peninsula activist Gay Wassall-Kelly and Cannery Lofts developer

Kevin Weeda are the city’s two likely picks to fill vacancies on the

city’s Economic Development Committee. Council members will vote

tonight on whether to appoint them to the committee.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Two new but well-known faces at the next Economic Development

Committee meeting.
