Newport Harbor humbles Marina, 8-0
The visiting Vikings from Marina High ran into a wall Tuesday and
that wall was the Newport Harbor field hockey team, which jumped out
to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period and cruised to an 8-0
Sunset League win.
Newport improved to 2-0-2 as Marina dropped to 0-3-0. Newport beat
Marina for the first time since losing to them in last November’s
Tournament of Champions final. The Vikings have beaten the Sailors
1-0 in the last two TOC finals, but Marina lost 14 seniors to
graduation.
Kaley Nix led Newport with three goals, Caitlin Farrell netted two
goals and Christina Barbatti, Carrie Gates and Meagan McHone added
goals.

VOLLEYBALL: CdM wins in five at HB
Corona del Mar High’s girls volleyball team took its act on the
road Tuesday night and pulled out a 15-3, 11-15, 15-7, 12-15, 15-5
nonleague victory at Huntington Beach.
The Sea Kings, now 3-4, were led by the play of Claire Allen (23
kills), Jordan Smith (23 digs) and Lindsey Ensign (10 kills).
Corona del Mar returns to action Friday in the first round of the
Capistrano Valley Tournament.

Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team was a 14-4 nonleague
winner over visiting Edison Tuesday, and returns today to host
Capistrano Valley.

The senior doubles tandem of Chi Doan and Minh-Thy Pham continued

Sage Hill High’s strong serving helped the Lightning girls
volleyball team earn a 15-6, 15-8, 15-12 over nonleague visitor
Estancia Monday.
Debbie Woder-Lee had eight aces and Sophia Hillgren added five for
the hosts.
Shelley Smith chipped in five kills and three aces and Cat Dailey
had four aces for the winners.

SOCCER: OCC women belt Santa Ana
An attack that produced 21 shots and four goals netted the Orange
Coast College women’s soccer team its seventh win Tuesday at OCC.
Led by sophomore Jaycee Mahler’s two goals and goals by freshmen
Sarah Ronquillo and Vanessa Rocha, the Bucs limited the Dons to just
two shots as they improved to 7-1, 3-1 in the Orange Empire
Conference.
Freshman forward Nikki Saenz assisted on Ronquillo’s goal, the
Pirates first in the 30th minute and lobbed a pass to a fleeting
Mahler, who headed the ball to her feet in-stride on a breakaway and
then booted the ball in. Sophomore Fernanda Velasco assisted on
Mahler’s first goal. Bianka Gratzer assisted on Rocha’s goal.

VOLLEYBALL: Point Loma sweeps VU
The Vanguard University Lions played well, but were unable to take
a game from visiting Point Loma Nazarene Tuesday night, losing in
three.
Vanguard created some problems for the No. 4-ranked Crusaders,
pushing Point Loma before falling, 30-28, in each of the first two
games.
In the finale the Lions fell, 30-16.
Jennifer Geisbauer paced the Lions with 14 kills and committed
only one attacking error. Setter Jennifer Johnson had 20 assists for
Vanguard, which dropped to 3-9, 0-6 in the GSAC.

GOLF: Anteaters men sharp
Led by senior Jeff Coburn’s 6-under-par 210, good for 11th
overall, the UC Irvine men’s golf team took fourth place out of 14
teams in the Anteaters’ first tournament of the 2002-03 season.
Coburn shot rounds of 68, 71, 71 to lead UC Irvine to its
fourth-place finish in the 54-hole Pacific Invitational at the
Reserve at Spanos Park.

SOCCER: VU women toppled, 2-1
Biola University was a 2-1 winner in women’s soccer Tuesday as
visiting Vanguard University came up short in Golden State Athletic
Conference play.
Jenae Welch scored Vanguard’s lone goal in the second half.
Vanguard fell to 2-3-1.
Biola improved to 5-2-1.

WATER POLO: Mesa wins, 12-11
The Costa Mesa High boys water polo team won its Golden West
League opener, 12-11, over visiting Ocean View at Costa Mesa High
Tuesday.
The Mustangs had diverse scoring as Evan Spencer, Brian Tipton,
Adam Douglas and Chris Darnas all scored goals, said Costa Mesa coach
Bob Shupp.
Mesa goalie Matt Jaroslawski made eight saves for the Mustangs who
improved to 3-2, 1-0 in league.

TENNIS: Estancia upset, 13-5
Estancia High’s Karleen Curran, Kelly Trettin and Heather Morton
each scored a set win over Santa Ana’s No. 1 girls tennis player, but
it was the host Saints who won the Golden West League match, 13-5.
Estancia (3-3, 3-1 in league) returns to action today, hosting El
Modena in nonleague action. Santa Ana improved to 4-1, 2-1.
