Hot Lava cuts corners
A last-minute goal on a corner kick from midfielder Jared
Rivera-Ashley allowed the Hot Lava of AYSO Region 57 boys under-14
soccer team to beat the Silver Slammers, 3-2.
George Logan scored the Lava’s first two goals on identical shots
as Geoffrey Grant made assists on both Logan goals.
Goalies Ryan Hultman and Andrew Hawkins stopped numerous shots on
goal while the defense of Matt Rhodes, Ricky Lobel, Andrew Martinez,
Nick Booth and Kyle Tomlin contained the Slammers with sustained
pressure throughout both halves.
Spencer Singh, David Grant and Chris Wallace controlled the
midfield with their speed and quickness.
In girls under-14 play:
* Corona del Mar 2, Yorba Linda/ Placentia 0
The Corona del Mar Girls Plus team improved to 2-1 with the win
over the Region 1398 Girls Under-14 team Saturday.
CdM received goals from Ashley Katz and Lauren Keligian with
Rachel Haber earning assists on both goals.
CdM defenders Samantha Wai, Katherine Kaczmarek, Emily Attyah and
Madison Kawakami played outstanding as goalies Haley Prickett and
Katz made several key saves.
Kara Jones, Lauren Davis, Emily Hirsch and Alex Gormly also played
key roles in the win against a physical Region 1398 squad.
In girls under-12 action:
* Vipers 2, California Crazy Cliffords 1
A goal in the waning minutes by Shayne Bastien catapulted the
Vipers to the win.
Viper goalies Rene Mycorn and Michelle Zucker shut out the
Cliffords in the second half after Heather Van Heil of the C.C.C.
scored the first goal of the game in the first half.
Zucker tied the game with a first-half goal as strong defensive
play was provided by Jenna Engstrom, Korinne Kornmann, Emily Baker,
MacKenzie Constantinos, Andrea Dubis and Sophie Molianri.
* Patriots 3, Purple Punishment 1
The Patriots scored three unanswered second-half goals after a
scoreless first half to capture the win.
Two goals from Kathryn Conner and one goal from Alexa Cohen keyed
the Patriot win as A.J. Rome assisted on Conner’s goals.
Claire Schmidt scored the goal for the Purple Punishment on the
second-half kickoff with both teams having outstanding playmaking by
Purple Punishment’s Kimberly Condino and Victoria Kent and stifling
Patriot defense by Amanda Garrett, Alix and Arianna Condin and goalie
McKenna Caskey.
* The Blue Crush came out with a 4-1 win Saturday.
Laurel Kopel and Amanda Johnson each had two goals with assists
from Kelsey Davis, Beth Arnesen, and Annalise Moore.
Strong defense was led by Megan Gaal and Jaclyn Risser as
goalkeeper Michelle Lancaster allowed only one goal.
In boys under-10 action:
* Patriots 3, Silver Galaxy 1
The Patriots never trailed and held off the Galaxy with two
second-half goals after leading 1-0 at the half.
Daniel Hohl put the Patriots up for good with his goal in the
second half as Christian Ball, Trevor Friedman, Jeremy Fox and Kevin
Hoffman played inspired at the midfield helping set up Hohl’s goal.
Grady Howe and Hector Marino kept the pressure on the Galaxy goal,
but Patrick Pearson secured the win.
Donald Dalton scored the Patriots’ first goal. Pearson, Evan Harr
and Adam Bronfin helped Maxwell Carpenter protect the goal.
* The Woofpack, coached by Chris Gaal, stormed to a 4-0 win as
Conner Gaal led the way with three goals followed by Brent Gray’s one
goal.
Excellent defense was provided by Gray, Matt English, Iman
Josheghani and Michael Drews.
Goalkeepers Colton Ford and English had their first shutout of the
season.
* Vipers 2, Blue Crush 2
Blake Thomsen scored two goals as the Vipers received strong
efforts from Kiefer Cohen, who drove and nearly scored after losing a
cleat at the midfield line, with offensive contributions made by
Billy MacDonald, Tobi Isaksen and Connor Morrill.
Defensive anchors were Ryan Delgado, Sam Parks, Spencer Bruno, Joe
Ctvrtlik and Saahm Aresh.
Solid goalkeeping was provided by Scott Youngman and Justin
Ruffalo.
* The Dragons won 4-2 Saturday behind two goals from Dylan Pievac
and one goal apiece from Cort Hastings and Matthew Francini.
Joshua Harrison played goalkeeper and Caden Stark and Chris
Robertson played solid defensively.
In boys under-8 American League action:
* The Red Spikes held onto an early lead and edged their
opponents, 5-4.
Carter Keddington scored two goals and Eli Kiani, Armon Alaghabnd
and Calder Maloney each scored one goal.
The Spikes received a solid team effort from Zack Salaam, Levi
Swoger, Nick Bergendahl and Spencer Carey.
Chris Weinberger did not play because of a broken wrist he
suffered two days before the game.
