Sea Kings, Newport Harbor roll in South Coast Tourney

The Corona del Mar High boys water polo team opened South Coast

Tournament play with two easy victories Thursday at CdM.

First, Artie Dorr scored five goals to lead the Sea Kings (4-2) to

a 19-5 victory over Dana Hills. John Mann, Jason DiRocco and Griffin

Gentry scored three goals each, while Daniel Niehenke and Nadim Hakim

contributed two apiece. Tom Harper also scored. The CdM defense

recorded 14 steals, and goalie Tyler Brundage stopped four shots.

Then, the Sea Kings dominated in a 15-3 win over Esperanza, when

Mann, a CdM senior, scored a game-high seven goals. Dorr added two

goals, while the DiRocco brothers, Jason and David, and Ryan Moore,

John Money and Hakim pitched in with single tallies. CdM goalie Beau

Stockstill recorded eight saves.

* Newport belts two

NEWPORT BEACH -- The Newport Harbor High boys water polo team

scored 36 goals in two games, resulting in victories in the South

Coast Tournament Thursday at Newport Harbor.

Brian Auer scored five goals, and Ross Sinclair scored four, as

the Sailors ran away with a 24-4 win over Buena Vista. Nathan Weiner,

Charlie Hockenberry and Michael Bury also scored three goals each.

Newport ended the day with a 12-6 victory over Marina. Weiner

scored five goals, while Bury added three. Sinclair, Bury, Brent

Armstrong and Jay Thompson contributed one goal each. Newport goalie

Michael Robinson recorded seven saves. Newport hosts El Toro tonight,

at 6.

* Estancia drops two

IRVINE -- Estancia High Eagles’ boys water polo team lost its

first two games of the Irvine Tournament to Irvine and then to Mater

Dei in the nightcap, 19-15, Thursday at University High.

Jess Hellmich led the Eagles over the two games with seven goals

total, while Frank Gamboa tallied six goals in the loss to the

Monarchs. Paul Collier scored five goals in the two games with Chad

Kunert, Matt Metkovich, and Anthony Herman each adding one goal.

Goalkeeper Nathan Marsteller recorded eight saves in each of the

two games.

The Eagles (1-4, 1-0) play their final two games of the tourney

Saturday at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m
