Some events not to miss
EYE ON ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Art Walk
Don’t forget that the next First Thursday’s Art Walk is Oct. 3.
We’re so lucky to have such a unique art experience like this in
Laguna Beach.
However, unfortunately some places of business are taking
advantage of the event and posing themselves as members. So make sure
to look at the list of participants and honor the galleries who put
in a lot of work and pay their monthly dues to make the Art Walk
possible.
Pure Genius
Don’t forget the best ticket in town is going fast. You won’t want
to miss “Lagunatics” -- a spoof on Laguna Beach and current events
that affect us all. It sells out every year so if you want to find
out more information or purchase tickets call 497-2584 or go online
to www.nosquare.org.
Photo Exhibit
Laguna local Johnny Ratz is having a photo exhibition of hot rod,
custom and classic cars. There will be more than 50 original
photographs of Southern California cars. The opening reception is at
Ekstrom Gallery at 2135 Laguna Canyon Road. There will also be live
blues featuring the James Harman Band. James is well known for
excellent harmonica playing. The exhibit runs Oct. 3, 4, 5.
Information: 235-4355. Admission is free and there will be
refreshments and the public is welcome.
Sunday Surfing
This Sunday at 5 p.m. as part of its ongoing Surf Culture: A
History of Surfing exhibit, the Laguna Art Museum will be featuring
an all about Gidget extravaganza. Real life -- yes not fake -- Gidget
models will be recounting Gidgetesque stories along with Deanne
Stillman, author and writer for Rolling Stone. Laguna Art Museum is
at 307 Cliff Drive and can be reached at 494-8971 or online at
www.lagunaartmuseum.org.
Laguna College’s Fund-raiser
The Laguna College of Art & Design will hold a creative
fund-raiser to help raise money for the student scholarship fund.
It’s called Palette to Palate and it will be held at the Laguna
Culinary arts at 550 S. Coast Highway. The price is $300 per person.
For information call Julie Bondi at 360-6000 Ext. 229.
Chipper, Chipper
I can’t say enough about the Cougar Fund and the Jane Goodall
Institute benefit last Friday at the Festival of Arts grounds. It was
one of those experiences that changes you, so moving -- a memory of a
lifetime. And hanging out with Jane Goodall -- well I still think I
must be dreaming -- it was absolutely amazing.
What’s wonderful is over my past month of coverage of the event I
have met some wonderful people. Webb Blessley, Donna Blessley, Cara
Blessley Lowe, Sonny Lowe and Tom Mangelsen -- and shall I reiterate
my reiteration -- Jane Goodall.
The Blessley family have truly become friends. They have invited
me to their house twice and from the start have acted like I was a
longtime friend, so generous. To honor me with the exclusive Goodall
interview following the event at a breakfast at their home was --
well I am speechless.
Mangelsen too has been unbelievably nice. His work is phenomenal.
Hopefully he’ll be able to find another gallery space in Downtown
Laguna because he really wants to be here.
