Eagles sparkle at Huntington Beach

Estancia High cross country teams fared exceptionally well at the

Huntington Beach Invitational Saturday, with Humberto Rojas and Diana

Rosete the focal points.

Rojas led the Eagles to the best combined time of the day with a

meet record clocking of 15:47 over the three-mile course as Estancia

missed the team title by one point.

Riverside-based King High won the meet with 58 points, Estancia

trailed with 59 points.

Alex Cahuantzi was fourth in 16:30. Others: Matt Zich (16th at

17:15), Abel Flores (17th at 17:19), Aaron Van Geem (24th at 17:23),

Gerardo Orozco (26th at 17:28), and Panfilo Elias (30th at 17:36).

Rosete, meanwhile, led the girls to a seventh-place finish,

capturing individual honors with a 19:04.

Other Estancia girls were Crystal Rincon (36th at 22:43), Fatima

Carrasco (23:56), Diana Castro (25:02) and Erika Plietez (27:05).

Also at Huntington Beach:

* Newport Harbor High’s girls distinguished themselves with solid

efforts, paced by Courtney Marshall’s 10th-place finish in 20:28 over

the traditionally slow three-mile course.

Also from Newport, Mary Bathen (26th at 22:03), Andi Sarris (29th

at 22:10), Courtney Hansen (30th at 22:13), Allison Hochwald (32nd at

22:32) and Caitlin Mai (37th at 22:50).

At the Stanford Invitational:

* Corona del Mar High cross country coach Bill Sumner said he

found out a lot more about his teams after his boys and girls squads

finished 11th and seventh in their divisions Saturday.

The Sea Kings’ Kevin Artz led the boys, finishing 56th with a

16:56 clocking on the 5,000 meters course and amid a 40-team

competition. CdM scored 335, while Oakmont won the team title. Corona

freshman Jack Turner finished 70th (17:08), while Blake Dillion

(75th, 17:12), Danny Quinlan (78th, 17:19) and J.C. Turner (81st,

17:19), also stayed with the Sea King pack. Bo Weidner (100th, 17:41)

and Brandon Borcoman (106th, 17:48) also ran.

On the girls side, senior Becky Cummins led the CdM girls and

helped the Sea Kings score 281 points. San Lorenzo Valley won the

title with 124 points. Cummins finished 25th (19:22). Ahlia Kattan

was second for the Sea Kings, finishing 49th (19:54), while Keelan

Cuyler (20:08), Taryn Kawata (20:11) and Melissa Swigert (20:26)

finished 64th, 68th and 78th, respectively. Jennifer Logan (111th,

21:05) and Kinzie Kramer (136th, 21:49) also competed.

At the Dana Hills Invitational:

* Freshman Zach Chandy ran Sage Hill High’s best time and took

fifth in the freshmen heat at the three-mile course Saturday.

Chandy took fifth out of 150 freshmen runners with a 17:50 as

fellow Sage Hill freshman Tim Lefler was 21st (19:09).

Juniors Chris Chiboucas (16th-17:55), Matt Sanford (29th-18:49)

and Ian Livingston (38- 19:21) also ram.

On the community college level:

* Living up to the name of the meet, both the Orange Coast College

men’s and women’s cross country teams won their respective races

Saturday at the Orange Coast Cross Country Classic at Fairview Park.

The women took the 1, 2, 5, 7 and 8 spots for 23 points in their

5,200-meter run, 45 points ahead of second-place Fullerton (68),

while the men completed their 6,400-meter run taking spots 2, 5, 12,

13 and 18 for 50 points, 16 points ahead of Bakersfield (66).

Ava Jones and Michelle Icban traded places this week but still

placed 1-2 in the women’s division with times of 19:12 and 19:14, respectively.

On the men’s side, Joel Guzman took second overall and led the OCC

men with a 20:41 followed by fifth-place overall finisher David Ojeda

(20:51).

Coast’s Suzette Dinoso had five points with a 20:13, followed by

Natalie St. Andre with a 20:30 (seven points) and Roseann Peters

(20:31) for eight points.

For the Coast men, Vidal Barragan finished in 12th place for 12

points with a 21:10 followed by Sam Ocampo (21:13 for 13th place).

Sandra Montoya had 13 points for the women with a 20:54 as Gilbert

Salas placed 18th (21:19).

Other OCC men included Andre Brown (21:30), Mike Casillas

(Estancia High-21:31.70), Irwin Salas (21:38), Kohyar Naderi (21:39),

Juan Altamirano (21:42) and Peter Ramirez (22:10).

Coast women to finish included Natalie Elliott (21:37), Shea

Corbin (21:55), Hanni Geider (22:04), Jasmine Geider (22:07), Claudia

Sanchez (22:08), Jane Alder (22:11), Katie Stretz (22:38), Sarah

Delano (24:02) and Yanet Perez (26:42).

VOLLEYBALL: CdM busy

* Corona del Mar High’s girls fell in five to Dana Hills and

Mission Viejo in the quarterfinals and third-place finals at the

Capistrano Valley Tournament.

Corona del Mar’s Jordan Smith was an all-tournament choice.

Friday’s play found CdM unbeatable in pool play, besting

Esperanza, 15-5, 15-6, North, 15-8, 15-12, and Canyon, 15-2, 15-0.

CdM lost to Dana Hills, 15-8, 14-16, 15-13, 12-15, 11-11, and Mission

won, 15-9, 15-10, 9-15, 12-15, 15-11.

SOCCER: Lions win

Vanguard University’s women’s soccer team was a 2-0 winner over

Southern Nazarene of Bethany, Okla. Saturday in a nonconference match

at Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego.

Vanguard, which outshot its foe, 32-9, was led by the scoring of

Nicole Avila (unassisted) and Alexsis Newbold, off an assist from

Amber Waddle.

WATER POLO: Coast splits

The Orange Coast College women’s water polo team split four games

over two days at the Mid-State Water Polo Tournament at Cuesta

College.

Coast, No. 4 in the coaches poll, beat eighth-ranked Cuesta, 10-6,

Saturday while losing to No. 3-ranked Sierra, 8-6.

The Bucs defeated Diablo Valley, 12-4, in their first game Friday,

but lost to top-ranked Long Beach, 8-7, later in the day.
