STANFORD -- The UC Irvine women’s cross country team turned in an

impressive performance with a fifth-place finish of 33 teams at the

Stanford University Invitational Saturday.

The host Cardinal won the meet with 50 points.

UCI’s Amanda Armstrong was 29th in 22:09 over 6,000 meters, and

Julie Manson was 33rd in 22:13. Also, Kaleena Yee (22:19), Lisa

Massoth (22:25), Wendy Chan (22:32), Janelle Del Soldato (22:47) and

Veronica Herrera (22:56).

UCI’s top men (the Anteaters were 13th) were Ricky Barnes (68th at

25:14), Tom Whelan (25:25), Travis Morisoli (25:34), David Santos

(26:05), John Kluve (26:11), Jules Castano (26:18) and Brian Harrison

(26:24).

* In women’s volleyball: UC Santa Barbara’s 10th-ranked Gauchos

swept past the UC Irvine Anteaters at Crawford Hall Saturday night

with a 30-27, 30-22, 30-24 conquest.

UCSB improved to 13-0 (4-0 in the Big Wet) behind Danielle Bauer’s

23 kills and 10 digs.

The Anteaters were led by Kelly Wing’s team-high 20 kills and 12

digs. Sami Cash had eight kills on 15 attempts and Chanda McLeod

added seven kills and nine digs. Setter Ashlie Hain had 36 assists.

UCI falls to 7-6, 1-3.

* Vanguard’s women’s volleyball team was a 30-25, 30-20, 24-30,

30-26 winner over visiting Christian Heritage in Golden State

Athletic Conference play, to improve to 4-10, 1-6. Christian Heritage

falls to 12-6, 4-3. Jennifer Geisbauer (13 kills) and Sonrisa Peace

(10 kills) were Vanguard’s ringleaders.
