Attempted bank robbery with remote

A man wearing an English tweed jacket and golf cap became

flustered as he attempted to rob a Bank of America in Newport Beach

on Friday, police said. The would-be thief left the bank without any

cash.

The man, who is thought to be in his 60s, was loitering in the

bank’s lobby at about 11:30 a.m. when he approached a teller window

and demanded cash, Newport Beach Sgt. Mark Everton said.

After a bank employee told him she could not give him the money,

he pulled a remote-control device out of a briefcase and claimed to

have a bomb. The device is thought to be a garage-door opener,

Everton said.

After the man was again told he would not be given any cash, he

became frustrated and left the bank, which is near John Wayne

Airport.

The man was holding a false nose-and-eyeglasses disguise that

resembled the features of Groucho Marx, Everton said. The man was not

apprehended, but could be charged with a felony attempted robbery if

caught.

Man injured after falling into propeller

A Carlsbad man was injured Saturday, when he slipped off a Newport

Beach dock and fell into a boat propeller, injuring his leg.

The 52-year-old man was stepping off a boat near the Cannery

Restaurant at about 1:30 p.m. when he slipped on the dock and

splashed into the water. The boat’s propeller caused several

bone-deep slashes on the man’s leg below the knee, Orange County

Harbor Patrol Sgt. Donna Soto said.

At the time of the mishap, the boat, a 28-foot yacht named

“Meena,” was backing into a dock. The boat is a Sea Ray Sundance and

is based in Fallbrook, Calif.

The man was transported to Hoag Hospital after Newport Beach

paramedics fished him out of the water. His leg will not need to be

amputated, Soto said.

The driver of the boat, a 46-year-old man, was not cited. An

investigation is ongoing.
