With just 20 minutes remaining in the game, San Diego Mesa scored

the first goal against Orange Coast College in a nonconference

women’s soccer duel Tuesday at OCC, but the Pirates would come back

to score one goal and the teams finished the game tied, 1-1.

The fifth-ranked Pirates and 11th-ranked Olympians battled the

first 45 minutes with no score. San Diego got on the board first in

the 70th minute as Jessie Trapp floated a ball toward the Pirate

penalty area where a header landed the ball at the feet of Megan

Briscoe who fired a shot past the Coast goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.

But just nine minutes later, OCC would respond with a goal of

their own as Fernanda Velasco won the ball near midfield and carried

to the top of the penalty arc, slotting a pass to Sarah Ronquillo.

Ronquillo took one touch and slotted the ball past a charging Sara

Lentz for her third goal of the season to draw the Pirates even.

Coast (8-1-1, 4-1-1 in the Orange Empire Conference) continued to

pepper the Mesa net with shots the final 10 minutes while the

Olympians countered with several shots of their own to Pirate

goalkeeper Heather Metcalf busy. Metcalf recorded four saves while

Lentz made seven saves for the visitors.

OCC outshot Mesa, 13-10, and also had three corner kicks to Mesa’s

one corner kick.

The Pirates return to conference play Friday when they host

Fullerton at 3 p.m.
