Marvelous Mustangs

The Costa Mesa Mustangs used all facets of the game in their first

win of the season Saturday in Costa Mesa’s Pop Warner Midget

Division.

The Mustangs won their first game of the season, a rocking 33-0

victory over Hawaiian Gardens.

D.J. Lepper scored two touchdowns, one on a punt return and the

other on a rush.

The Mustangs scored quickly on a 25-yard pass play from

quarterback Matt Wedgeworth to tight end Tim Morley to take a 7-0

lead.

Anthony Dickerson intercepted a pass and took it down the sideline

to complete a 40-yard touchdown to put Mesa up 20-0.

In Costa Mesa Pee Wee play:

* Los Alamitos Griffins 14, Costa Mesa Mustangs 7

The Mustangs held tough in a defensive struggle, but couldn’t come

out with a win against the Griffins.

Joshua Erno scored a touchdown at the beginning of the third

quarter to get the Mustangs back into the game as Gilbert Beas kicked

the extra point.

Beas and Omar Luna both had interceptions in the second half.

Beas ran 70 yards on his interception before being tackled at the

20-yard line.

Joey Palacios, Jo-Jo Galvez, Mike Morley and Jason Moreno each

played strong defense as Erno made a tackle to prevent a third

Griffins’ touchdown.

In Junior Pee Wee action:

* Costa Mesa Mustangs 14, Huntington Beach Chargers 0

Chris Gute scored two touchdowns and the defense held strong for

Costa Mesa as they recorded the Mustangs shutout over previously

undefeated Huntington Beach.

With assistance from the offensive line, Gute scored two

touchdowns and two extra points to lead the Mustangs.

He also intercepted a pass deep in Charger territory and ran it

back for an apparent touchdown, but the referees called it back

saying Gute stepped out of bounds.

Other standouts for Costa Mesa included Jacob Folsom, who

completed a 7-yard pass and a 20-yard carry. On defense Eric Brown

had two fumble recoveries and Derek Amendola had one interception as

Devin Anthony, Michael Mataele, Brandon Coffey, Greg Gute and Kristin

Woods all played key roles on defense.
