CdM wins, 10-6

Corona del Mar High’s Artie Dorr scored eight goals to help

spearhead the Sea Kings to a 10-6 nonleague win Wednesday over

visiting San Clemente.

The Sea Kings, ranked third in CIF Southern Section Division I,

led 5-1 at halftime and 8-2 after three quarters before the Tritons,

ranked eighth, scored four goals in the fourth period, three as CdM

played the last 5:47 with a man down.

CdM had nine steals to San Clemente’s three, as John Money led the

team with two steals followed by David DiRocco’s two steals and John

Mann, Jason DiRocco, Ali Kattan and Griffin Gentry, who all had one

steal apiece.

Mann scored twice and added an assist for the Sea Kings as Jason

DiRocco tallied six assists to lead CdM.

Beau Stockstill made 13 saves for the Sea Kings.

POLO: OCC women win

The Orange Coast College women’s water polo team smothered Orange

Empire Conference foe Saddleback, 16-4, Wednesday, in the winner’s

tank.

OCC coach Mike Giles used his entire bench in the win as 10

different players scored goals including freshman utility Nicole

Stuiber, who scored to end the first period and again to open the

second.

Sheri Meyer and Amber Braly also had two goals apiece for the

Pirates (12-4, 4-0 in the OEC). Stuiber also had three assists for

the Pirates.

Coast goalkeeper Courtney Robertson made two saves through three

periods before Beth Strauss made one save in the final quarter.

The Bucs host the University of Utah club team today at 2 p.m. and

compete in the Ventura Tournament Friday and Saturday.

TENNIS: Tars fall, 15-3

The No. 1 doubles duo of Diana Khoury and A.J. Olson won two of

three sets Wednesday, but Newport Harbor lost to visiting Laguna

Beach, 15-3, in a nonleague match Wednesday afternoon.

Newport’s doubles tandem of Bonnie Adams and Carly Adams won one

set for Newport (2-3), ranked ninth in CIF Southern Section Division

I, who open Sea View League play today at 3 p.m. against visiting

Aliso Niguel.

“(Laguna Beach) is very good,” Newport coach Fletcher Olson said

about the Breakers, now 5-1 and ranked No. 10 in CIF SS Division I

heading into the match. “I wanted to use all the players in the

match. Their singles players were dominant.”

Khoury and Olson are now 15-1 in five matches this season.

Singles -- McIntosh (NH) lost to Sandman 3-6; lost to

VOLLEYBALL: Mesa wins

The Costa Mesa girls volleyball team won in three sets Wednesday

over visiting Golden West League foe Orange to improve to 3-2, 2-0 in

league.

Mesa won 15-3, 15-3, 17-15, as the Mustangs’ Devin Denman tallied

a team-high nine kills. Kristen Bagwell added seven kills and six

digs. Jackie Havens led the Mustangs with seven digs and had three

aces.

Jenny Sparks collected 25 assists and Jasmine Day contributed four

blocks.

Costa Mesa hosts league rival Estancia Friday.

POLO: OCC men roll

An eight-goal first period set the Orange Coast College men’s

water polo team well on their way to a 15-4 Orange Empire Conference

win over visiting Saddleback Wednesday at OCC.

The Pirates, 5-5, 2-2 in conference, received six goals from Greg

Worthing, three from Billy Jolly, two apiece from Steve Murphy and

Jake Herrmann and one goal each from Mike Nichols and Nick Wilbur.

Coast goalkeepers Sean Andrews and Kile Baker made nine and eight

saves, respectively, for the Bucs, who compete in the Citrus

Tournament at Citrus College and Mt. Sac Friday and Saturday.

GOLF: Pope sparkles

Orange Coast College women’s golfer Marilyn Pope shot her best

round of the season as OCC lost an Orange Empire Conference match

against Saddleback Wednesday in Mission Viejo.

Pope, in her best-ever effort, had two birdies and nine pars en

route to shooting an 80 on the par-72 Tijeras Creek Golf Club, one

shot more than medalist Lisa Manning of Saddleback, who fired a 79 to

lead Saddleback to a 354-385 win over the Pirates.

Scorers for OCC (3-4) included Joanne Durocher and Gina Watkins,

who both fired 101s and Laura Sumpter, at103.

VOLLEYBALL: CdM sweeps

Corona del Mar High’s girls volleyball team swept host San

Clemente in nonleague play Wednesday, 15-3, 15-10, 15-8.

Claire Allen (13 kills), Lindsey Ensign (12 kills) and Jordan

Smith (18 digs) led CdM’s assault. The Sea Kings improved their

overall record to 7-6.

GOLF: CdM just misses

Corona del Mar High’s girls had the medalist, Katie Albright with

a 5-over 41 for nine holes at Mission Viejo Country Club, but dropped

a 251-252 decision to nonleague foe Mission Viejo Wednesday.

Other CdM scorers for CdM, which fell to 3-6 overall, were Jackie

McCoy (47), Veronica Friedman (51), Jennifer Woo (53) and Maggie

Nelson (60).
