Davis making it Krystle clear

Sophomore outside hitter for Orange Coast College women’s

volleyball team Krystle Davis has begun to write her name in more

than a few record books.

Besides owning the single-season Coast record for service aces,

76, which she fired last season, Davis recently passed Kati French

(89) for career service aces when she tallied five aces in Coast’s

five-game win over Ventura Sept. 25.

Davis now has 97 career service aces, 21 already this season in

five matches. She broke French’s record set during the 1995-96

seasons. French’s 59 service aces in a single season was the previous

record that Davis broke last season.

Though she didn’t have any aces in the season-opener at

Southwestern, Davis more than made up for that with eight in a

five-game win over Palomar in OCC’s home opener and tallied three

more against Pasadena Sept. 20, setting the table to break the

record.

At her current pace of 1.3 aces per game, Davis would finish the

2002 season with 79 aces and 155 aces in her two-year career if she

plays in 60 games as she did last season.

She looks to add to the total when the Pirates (5-0) host the

University of Baja California in Peterson Gym Friday at 7 p.m.

Through five matches, freshman outside hitter Melissa Zapiain

leads the team with 63 kills followed by freshman outside hitter

Kelly Overby’s 57 and Davis’ 52 kills.

Zapiain is also first on the team in solo blocks (14) followed by

sophomore outside hitter Casey Petersen’s 13 solo stops. Zapiain is

second to sophomore libero Janelle Jeremiah in digs -- 32 for

Jeremiah and 31 for Zapiain.

California with 92 points in this week’s California Community College

Football Poll as voted by coaches, sports information directors and

the media, after their 28-10 victory over visiting El Camino Saturday

night.
