BEST BUYS

Richard Yeakel Antiques is for serious antique and art collectors.

Most clients have second homes and depend on Yeakel for his extensive

knowledge of antiques. Seen in the store have been Clint Eastwood,

Kelly Harmon and Jaclyn Smith.

Yeakel doesn’t like things refinished or replaced. The store’s

specialties include French, Spanish, German, English and American

pieces from the 14th to the 18th centuries.Current Spanish Colonial

pieces are a pair of chairs and a candle shelf. Other rare items

include: an 18th century Welsh bookcase, 17th century French

provincial tapestry, 19th century French painted doors with original

hardware, a German Gothic Madonna and Child, 18th century Marcel

plates and a 17th century chinoiserie chest of drawers. Open from 10

a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment. 1099 S.

Coast Highway. (949) 494-5526.

The place for Bauer pottery

Oak Street Antiques specializes in California pottery, especially

the very hot Bauer pottery, mostly from the 1930s.

“It was a sleeper for a long time,” owner Karen K. Maroney

says. After World War II, L.A.-based Bauer couldn’t compete with

prices on cheap Japanese imports and eventually shut down. Maroney

finds pieces through estate sales and contacts back East. Fiesta

pottery and Laguna’s Brayton Pottery is also sold here. Plus small

furniture pieces, postcards and trade cards from the late 1800s,

glassware, linens, old books and vintage toys. The shop was written

up in the October issue of Art & Antiques magazine . Open from 11

a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas only. 1103 S.

Coast Highway. (949) 494-6628.

Affordable furniture

Inventory moves fast at On Consignment. Affordable home

furnishings and accessories are set below market value and prices

decrease with each passing week. Owners Janet Wagner and Teri Hoops

allow items to stay 10 weeks. If not sold, all consignments are given

to charity or back to the consigner. Furniture, jewelry and art are

popular. Plus, there are bargains on kitchen items. Open from 10 a.m.

to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. 1190

Heidelberg Pastry & Bistro is known for its excellent coffee and

fresh baked pastries. Since 1990 the bakery’s been popular for its

bistro-style foods: sandwiches, Danishes, cheese pockets, chocolate

croissants and apple muffins. Open from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday

through Saturday and from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. 1100 S. Coast

Beauty for an occasion

The best looking wreaths I’ve seen are at The English Garden.

Owner Anita Rohloff selects extraordinary wreaths made of lichen, egg

shells or preserved florals. During the Christmas season the

selection is prime and custom orders are available. The English

Garden, a floral shop for weddings and parties, has a great gift and

plant section. Best sellers are custom-size antique ivory candles.

Gifts include: cache pots, fruit and vegetable pillows, urns, vintage

and iron furniture, iron plant stands, benches and wall pieces. Open

from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday. 1199 S. Coast Highway. (949) 494-4733.
