When opportunities arise
Local nonprofit organizations will share hands-on service
opportunities at the third annual Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith
Council Community Service Fair, held from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Oct. 16 at the Newport Beach Stake at 16th Street and Dover Drive.
Participating nonprofits include Habitat for Humanity, FISH-Harbor
Area, Share Our Selves, Families Forward, Adopt a Social Worker, Hoag
Hospital, Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter and Adult Day Services of
Orange County.
“Our goal is to provide an opportunity for individuals, clubs and
congregations to hear about hands-on service opportunities in our
community without having to make a commitment to work with a group,”
said Lane Calvert, board member and chair of the Service Fair. “They
can ask questions, hear the opportunities and then choose for
themselves where they want to invest their time and talent.
“In addition, we will present awards to individuals, clubs and
groups for the hands-on service they have given during the past 12
months,” Calvert added. Lunch is $7.50 per person with a reservation,
$10 without. For reservations, call Calvert at (714) 468-2323, ext.
6003.
ARTS FESTIVAL
The South Coast Fine Arts Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m. Oct. 12 to 13 in Newport Beach at the Newport Dunes Waterfront
Resort. This arts and entertainment event will feature 100 artists in
different mediums from the Western United States and Southern
California. All proceeds will benefit South Coast Children’s Society,
the Orange County nonprofit agency that provides homes, care and
treatment for abused and abandoned children.
The festival will blend art, live entertainment, local cuisine and
informative demonstrations. A Children’s Arts & Crafts Playground
will be available where children can make their own creations. It
costs only $5, and children younger than 5 are free. Newport Dunes
Waterfront Resort is at 1131 Back Bay Drive, Newport Beach.
An evening with the artists, with live music, food and wine and a
silent auction, will be held the night of Oct. 12. Tickets: $125 per
person. For more information, call (949) 722-3492, ext. 25.
