In his last movie, “The Shootist,” John Wayne played a character

whose time has come. Life, or more fittingly, death, catches up with

a gunfighter who’s managed to avoid his end.

The same is about to happen to the Duke’s Newport Beach house,

though some residents here are none too happy about it. But, it’s

hard to argue with construction plans that, save the home’s famous

past owner, would not get a second thought.

Do owners Robert and Beverly Cohen have any moral obligation to

keep the Duke’s Bay Shore Drive home as is? No. So, in this case, all

better stand down the posse and corral the horses. But if the Cohens

want to buy a round of whiskeys at the neighborhood saloon, that

would not be a bad way to say “Farewell” to this piece of Wild West

Hollywood legend.
