Both the varsity and frosh-soph field hockey teams from Newport

Harbor High took first place at the Orange County Invitational

Saturday at Marina High.

The varsity won its three games Saturday, 6-0 over Westminster, a

sudden death overtime win over Santa Ana after both teams ended

regulation tied, 0-0, and then defeated Sunset League rival Edison,

3-0 in the finals. Meanwhile, the frosh-soph team led by Coach Kim

Erickson, playing a junior varsity schedule, downed Edison 2-1 today

to go 5-1 overall in the tournament and improved to 7-1 on the year.

The Sailors’ varsity team (10-0-2, 4-0-2 in league) won despite

three starters out of the lineup. Sweeper Danielle Pfaff and Lauren

Curtis are hurt, and left midfielder Chanelle Sladics will miss the

rest of the season after she broke her collarbone skateboarding

Friday.

Two first-half goals from Kaley Nix, one assisted by Rachel

Furman, in the first half and a Kirsten Chamberlain goal assisted by

Nix in the second half.

Jillian Whitfield scored the winning strike in sudden-death

overtime against Santa Ana after Amanda Wittman’s stroke tied Santa

Ana.

Cristina Barbatti scored two goals with assists from Kerrie Gates

on both goals as Nix, Furman and Kristin Jendrusina each scored one

in Newport’s 6-0 win over Westminster.

Wittman had three shutouts Saturday, making 12 saves in three

games, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Five Newport players made the all-tournament team, including Dana

Owad, Nix, Furman and Tiffany Vandersloot.
