Newport Dunes owners make right decision

The decision by the new Dunes owners not to build a hotel in the

foreseeable future is the best decision they could have made for our

city. Any hotel would have added significant traffic to the already

gridlocked intersection at Bayside and Pacific Coast Highway. Kudos

to the new Dunes owners for being so sensitive to our community’s

concerns.

The wrong Beek was chosen for DP 103 list

Wish to call your attention to your special section, Daily Pilot

Top 103, where you published the wrong Beek. Seymour is the most

beneficial to the community.

Pimco leader deserves top spot on the DP 103 list

I’ve watched year after year how you have left off probably one of

the most influential businessmen in Newport Beach, let alone the

country, when it comes to the bond market, and that is Bill Gross

from Pimco. This representative from the Newport Beach community not

only has a major influence on the stock and markets but is weekly, if

not daily, broadcast around the globe from his Newport Beach office

in Fashion Island giving his commentary on the U.S. Treasury market.

I find it very upsetting that you can have local real estate agents,

a dog that can’t swim in the water and other folks that maybe are

less of an influence or less important in our community. Where’s

Lindsey Davenport? Where’s Bill Gross? This are the people that help

put Newport Beach on the map for a world community to see.

Still curious about suspended lawyer

I was literally heading out the door for a weeklong vacation when

the article in Saturday’s Daily Pilot about Jerry Sheer caught my eye

(“City attorney Scheer reinstated”). I have no doubt that Sheer is

feeling stress from the situation. The public reports have done

nothing to allay the curiosity of the residents of this city. Of

course, we can all sleep better with Chris Steel on the case. His

quote in the Pilot, “I couldn’t find a single impropriety and I

thought we were headed down the wrong track,” made me wonder whether

he was talking about his case or this case.

Don’t even think of booting Bell Curve columnist

In response to the Oct. 3 letter from reader David Miller, “Pilot

should consider retiring Bell Curve columnist,” don’t you dare! He’s

the one person I can count on to speak my mind. Bell is the voice of

reason regarding our often self-indulgent city of Newport Beach. We

have many reasons to enjoy and appreciate where we live, but economic

and political diversity are not among them. We are not a racially

mixed city. We are a small town whose energies remain focused on

issues other communities would feel blessed to count among their

problems. It is precisely because we live where we do and how we do

that make Bell’s observations essential. The Bell Curve is an

excellent reflecting pool in which we should be anxious to gaze, or

at least occasionally willing to peek, for a glimpse at how we look.

Ficus coverage focuses attention on Balboa

Kudos to the tree huggers.

As a proprietor at “ground zero,” I, along with my good neighbors,

have enjoyed a windfall thanks to your cause celebre.

We have enjoyed more than our 15 minutes of fame, so keep those

uneducated cards and letters coming. We might just survive another

long and lonely winter with your help.

My only regret is that we cannot provide you with a life.

Newport Beach reader has thoughts for Pilot staff

Thoughts for the day:

* Regarding ficus trees, cool it. We’re tired of hearing about

them. The city did the only thing that was logical.

* Regarding steeples, the higher, the better. We need a landmark

in an otherwise drab neighborhood.
