Newport Harbor High’s girls field hockey team continues to smother

most competition as evidenced by an 8-0 thrashing of host Westminster

in Sunset League play Tuesday.

Amanda Wittman, usually the goalie, scored two spectacular goals,

one a “slice,” another a “reverse stick,” and topped it off with an

assist to pace the one-sided victory.

Also of note, two goals and standout midfield play from Rachel

Furman, as well as two goals from Kaley Nix and single scores from

Allison Rawlins and Kristin Jendrusina.

Kerrie Gates had two assists and Jill Whitfield, usually in the

scoring mix, was sent to the cage and had one save for the Sailors,

who outshot Westminster, 24-2.

Newport improved to 11-0-2, 5-0-2 in the Sunset League.

TENNIS: Sailors breeze, 14-4

Newport Harbor High junior Vanessa Dunlap swept 18 singles games and the Sailors swept in doubles to defeat host Irvine, 14-4, in a

Sea View League girls tennis match Tuesday.

Diana Khoury and A.J. Olson upped their doubles record to 20-1

this season, while sisters Bonnie and Carly Adams, as well as Megan

McKay and Brittanny Sturgess, polished off their doubles opponents

for the Sailors.

Newport, ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division I,

improved to 5-3, 2-0 in league.

Singles - Kay (NH) lost to Carinera, 1-6, lost to Lai,

3-6, lost to Laiborich, 0-6; McIntosh (NH) won, 6-0, 6-1, Hacksby

TENNIS: CdM girls roll, 18-0

The Corona del Mar High girls tennis team continued its mastery of

the Pacific Coast League with an 18-0 victory over visiting Tesoro

Tuesday.

“It was a pretty routine day, nothing special,” CdM Coach Andy

Stewart said.

The Sea Kings’ advantage allowed Stewart to plug in substitutes

and give them an opportunity to earn CdM varsity victories.

Tawny Minna substituted at No. 3 singles and scored a 7-6 victory

for the Sea Kings, while the doubles team of Jennifer Way and Maggie

Souzzi substituted at No. 1 doubles and contributed two wins.

Brittany Holland, CdM’s No. 1 singles player, and Taylynn Snyder,

the No. 2, did not drop a game in sweeping to their sets, and helped

CdM improve to 7-1, 2-0 in the PCL.

Corona del Mar hosts Dana Hills today in a nonleague match.

TENNIS: Eagles fly, 11-7

Estancia High seniors Karleen Curran and Kelly Trettin each won

two singles sets to propel the host Eagles to an 11-7 Golden West League girls tennis victory over Ocean View Tuesday.

All three Estancia doubles teams also won two sets apiece to help

the Eagles improve to 5-5, 5-2 in league.

Estancia returns to league play Thursday when it visits

Westminster.

POLO: Eagles drop 12-6 duel

Estancia High junior Anthony Hermann scored three goals, but the

Eagles boys water polo team was outscored 10-4 in the final three

quarters and lost, 12-6, to Golden West League visitor Santa Ana

Tuesday.

Senior Frank Gamboa contributed two goals for the Eagles (2-7, 1-2

in league), while sophomore Matt Metkovich posted one goal. Estancia

senior goalie Todd Skipper recorded three saves.

POLO: CdM surprised, 11-7

Corona del Mar High’s highly regarded boys water polo team failed

to live up to its billing Tuesday as visiting El Toro posted an 11-7

nonleague victory, keyed by the scoring of Chris Allen (four goals)

and Matt Grace (three goals).

Jason DiRocco scored three goals for Corona del Mar, and John Mann

added two goals, but the hosts were unable to stay with El Toro after

a 2-2 standoff in the first quarter.

Turnovers and man-down situations plagued Corona del Mar (7-4)

POLO: Tars Bury Capo, 12-5

Newport Harbor High’s boys water polo team was a 12-5 winner in

nonleague play Tuesday at Saddleback College as host Capistrano

Valley proved unable to keep pace in the second half after a 4-4

halftime standoff.

Michael Bury scored three goals for Newport and teammates Nathan

Weiner, Brent Armstrong and Jay Thompson chipped in with two goals.

Also scoring were Bryan Auer, Clay Jorth and Morgan Laidlaw.

Michael Robinson was credited with 11 saves in the Sailors’ net.

The Sailors are back in Sea View League action today when they

host Aliso Niguel.

GOLF: CdM girls roll

Corona del Mar High’s girls golf team was a 243-254 winner over

previously unbeaten University in Pacific Coast League play Tuesday,

keyed by the medalist efforts of Jackie McCoy, who parred the final

holes for a 6-over 42 at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Club.

Backing her up were Jennifer Wood (44), Katie Albright (45),

Veronica Friedman (56) and Caitlin McDonald (56).

CdM is now 6-5, 2-0 in the PCL.

GOLF: UCI wins title

The UC Irvine men’s golf team won the Club Glove Intercollegiate

tournament that concluded Tuesday at Saticoy Country Club in Somis.

The Anteaters finished with a 54-hole total of 868, one shot ahead

of host Pepperdine. UCI, which trailed Pepperdine by five shots after

two rounds, carded the best team score in Tuesday’s final round with

287. Oklahoma was third at 884, New Mexico fourth at 887 and UCLA

fifth at 889.

Anteater senior Jeff Coburn was the tournament medalist as he made

par on the first playoff hole to defeat New Mexico’s Jae Choi after

both shot 5-under totals of 211 for 54 holes. Coburn shot a final

round of 2-under 70 Tuesday.

UCI’s Jay Choe was 12th at 291, Vinnie Poncino was 15th at 222,

Ryan Armstrong was 19th at 223 and Mike Lavery was 24th at 225.

CC: Sage Hills falls

Sage Hill High’s boys and girls cross country team teams dropped

Academy League decisions to St. Margaret’s at Mason Park Tuesday

despite some solid efforts.

The girls, who lost a 16-45 decision, were paced by Kelsey Rose’s

personal best of 23:15, with Alis Brito (24:30) and Megan Curry

(25:54) posting solid efforts.

Freshman Zach Chandy paced Sage Hills’ boys with a personal best

17:28 and Chris Chiboucas (17:30) made it a 3-4 finish, but St.

Margaret’s was a 21-40 victor. Tim Lefler also placed well with an

18:27 effort.

GOLF: UCI women win

Sophomore Stella Lee carded a second round low of 70 to help UC

Irvine to a sixth-place finish at the Heather Farr/University of

Colorado Memorial at the Omni Interlocken Resort in Broomfield, Co.

Tuesday.

Lee finished with a two-day total of 148 (78-70), four shots

behind medalist Nicole Keller of Idaho.

UCI’s Angela Won was 16th at 152 (78-74), Shelly Raworth was 49th

at 161 (82-79), Sara Huber was 53rd at 162 (77-85) and Channing

Loveoy was 58th with a 163.

GOLF: Mesa wins

Jean You led Costa Mesa High’s girls golf team with a 3-over 38 at

Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club as the Mustangs recorded a 256-356

victory over Oxford Academy in Golden West League play Tuesday.

You had six pars en route to her finish. Backing her up was the

play of Rachel Hughes and Jessica Bunnell, both at 50, and Christian

Casale (56).

Costa Mesa is now 3-5, 2-1 in league.

TENNIS: Mesa belts Santa Ana

Costa Mesa girls tennis continued their winning ways in the Golden

West League with a 14-4 victory over host Saddleback Tuesday.

Mesa’s No. 1 singles player Hilary Havens still has not lost a set

this season and breezed through her matches, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, while

freshman Evelyn Wallis won her first set of the season over

Saddleback’s No. 3 singles player.

Mesa’s doubles duos of Chi Doan-Minh-Thy Pham, Brenda Tran-Thao Vu

and Laura Fais-Valerie Gomez only lost one set between all three.

“Hilary and our No. 1 and 2 doubles were dominant,” said Costa

Mesa coach Joe Havens.

Doan and Thy-Pham have lost only one set this year at No. 1

doubles.

Mesa (6-5, 5-1 in league) hosts Ocean View Thursday. The Mustangs

and Westminster sit atop the league with only one loss.

“It’s going to be a tough end of season going into the last three

matches against Westminster, Estancia and Saddleback,” Havens said.

Costa Mesa hosts Ocean View on Thursday.
