Coast socks it to the Rustlers, twice
The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team featured seven goal
scorers in its 9-0 Orange Empire Conference road victory over
district rival Golden West Tuesday.
OCC sophomore Jaycee Mahler, the school’s career scoring leader,
found the back of the net twice and increased her season total to 15
goals. Vanessa Rocha, Amber Blake, Lauren Cassity, Laurie Moore,
Nikki Saenz and Fernanda Velasco scored a goal each.
Cassity, Rocha and Marissa McGregor contributed two assists
apiece, while Saenz delivered one assist. OCC goalkeeper Heather
Metcalf recorded four saves.
The Golden West goalkeepers, Amber McMahon and Victoria Barragan,
combined for 22 saves.
The Pirates (12-1-1, 8-1-0 in OEC) built a 5-0 lead in the first
half. Golden West dropped to 4-8-0, 2-6-0.
* Orange Coast College’s men’s soccer team was a 5-0 winner over
Orange Empire Conference foe Golden West Tuesday, punishing the rival
Rustlers with four goals in the last 27 minutes to improve to 9-2-2,
2-0-2 in the OEC.
Freshman Miguel Ochoa scored twice and Derek Martell added a goal
and an assist.
Martel scored first in the early going, driving home a loose ball
just in front of the GWC goal for his fifth goal of the season.
Ochoa scored in the 63rd and 78th minute, the first off an assist
from Joel Sotolongo, the second off a deflection.
Muluwa Manda scored off assists from Martell and Bill McManus in
the 83rd minute, and Dante Zena was rewarded for some hard work with
3:00 left, blasting header into the back of the net off a loose ball
after Greg Reese drove and shot, the ball caroming into Zena’s range.
Josh Cotsenmoyer had four saves to post the shutout.

Fresno State stopped host Vanguard University, 3-1, in a Golden
State Athletic Conference duel.
Vanguard pulled into a 1-1 tie early in the second half on a
Jarrett Borrego score off a Nate Kramer assist, but Fresno Pacific
pulled ahead in the 55th minute and added some icing with 30 seconds
remaining.
Vanguard drops to 49-, 0-3 in the GSAC. Fresno Pacific improves to
6-4-1, 2-0-1.
