In stark contrast to their 11-7 loss against El Toro Tuesday, the

Corona del Mar boys water polo team put together four solid periods

of play against University Wednesday and cruised to a 17-3 win in

both teams’ first Pacific Coast League match.

CdM, (8-4, 1-0 in league) and No. 3 in CIF Southern Section

Division I kept the heat on the visiting Trojans (6-7, 0-1 in league)

at CdM High the entire way, scoring seven goals in the third period

and adding three in the fourth. The 10 second-half goals were an

improvement to the Sea Kings’ three second-half scores against El

Toro, ranked No. 6 in Division I.

“I told the team that we played one good quarter against El Toro,”

said Sea Kings coach Tim Salvino. “In all of our losses we haven’t

played four quarters together as a team and (playing together for

four quarters) is the key to playing good teams. El Toro was a

wake-up call for us, an indicator that they need to play as a team

and be mentally prepared. They can’t just show up and expect to win.”

University led briefly, 1-0, on the first of two goals by David

Mock, but the Trojans’ lead was short lived.

John Money scored two goals less than a minute apart and Artie

Dorr made it 3-1 at the end of the first period and CdM was well on

its way.

Several Sea King scoring chances came from steals as University

attacked.

CdM’s main thief was Jason DiRocco with five steals. He stole the

ball deep in the CdM zone in the third quarter and swam the length of

the pool before shooting the ball into the net for one of his three

third-period goals.

Six different CdM players made steals including Jason DiRocco.

Artie Dorr, Ali Kattan, Travis Hersh, Nadim Hakim and Daniel Niehenke

each had one steal.

Dorr scored five goals to led the team. John Mann, John Money and

Griffin Gentry each scored two goals with Tom Harper, Ryan Moore and

Niehenke each tallying one goal for the Sea Kings.

Of CdM’s 17 goals, 12 came on assists from Dorr (three), Money

(three), Niehenke (two), Jason DiRocco (two) and one assist each from

Mann and Harper.

CdM played disciplined as well Wednesday only having one ejection

to University’s three.

The Sea Kings took advantage of two 6-on-5 scenarios. Gentry and

Moore scored goals on the man advantage.

CdM goalkeepers Tyler Brundage (second half) and Beau Stockstill

(first half) saved 10 shots between them with Brundage making seven

saves and Stockstill making three saves.

On one University attack in the fourth quarter Brundage leaped

with two arms in the air to deflect a shot at point-blank range by

University’s Kyle Schafer.

Team speed broke University’s zone, Salvino said.
