Lights, camera, action

Students at Huntington Beach High School got a taste of Hollywood

last week when they met the director and cast members of a movie

filmed at their school and acted as movie critics.

Students in the school’s entertainment and tourism class watched a

five-minute clip of “Raspberry & Lavender,” which did some filming at

the school during the summer and features some Huntington Beach

students as extras.

Students met some of the film’s cast members as well as the film’s

director, Johnny Kim.

The teen film touches on a number of issues, including dating and

sex. It’s centered on a wealthy 17-year-old student who meets the

girl of his dreams at his new high school.

Korean-born Kim is finishing production on the film and is looking

for a distributor.

Kim had a small role in “Outbreak” with Dustin Hoffman and Rene

Russo, and has also appeared in “Independence Day.”

Just pennies can prevent substance abuse

A few pennies can help support substance abuse programs in the

city.

The Pennies for Prevention program is asking residents to donate

spare change to help save substance-abuse programs for children from

further city budget cuts.

Collection cans have been placed at each of the city’s fire

stations, the police department, police department substations,

recreation centers and each of the city’s seven McDonald’s locations.

Money collected throughout the month will be used to help fund

substance-abuse programs such as the DARE program, program director

Barbara Huss said.

Businesses interested in participating in the program can call

Huss at (714) 493-6169. Those interested in making a donation or in

volunteering can call (714) 536-5920.
