Army Spec. Neil A. Black, son of Roma Lee Baker and grandson of

Karen J. Buck of Huntington Beach, has been deployed to Kuwait to

support dual missions of Operations Southern Watch and Enduring

Freedom. Black is a 1998 graduate of Edison High School.... Marine

Corps Cpl. Conrad B. Griego III, son of Angela A. Clitherow of

Huntington Beach, recently departed on a six-month deployment to the

Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the 24th Marine

Expeditionary Unit based in Camp Lejeune, N.C..... Army Reserve Pfc.

Frank D. Soto, grandson of Marta Gloudeman of Huntington Beach, has

graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Soto is a graduate of Marina High School.... Navy Seaman Recruit

Nathaniel R. Taylor, a 2001 graduate of Edison High School, recently

completed the Navy’s Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training at

Naval Submarine School, Groton, Conn. .... Marine Corps Pvt. Kenneth

M. Roach, son of Barbara Sandefor of Huntington Beach, recently

completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit, Depot, San

Diego.... Cal State Long Beach students Robin Delfino, Devon Sharon,

Jaime Shurtz, Kyle Cook, Christina Nguyen and Mark Jay, all from

Huntington Beach, have been selected to study abroad during the

2002-03 academic year. Selection is competitive and is based on home

campus recommendations and the applicant’s academic record. To

qualify, the students needed upper division or graduate standing, a

cumulative grade-point average of 2.75 or 3.0 and must have completed

required language or other preparatory study.... Jack H. Schneider,

son of Greg B. and Monica H. Schneider of Huntington Beach and a 2000

graduate of Edison High School, recently graduated from the Army ROTC

Leader’s Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky. The four-week course is

noted as a world-class leadership development experience.... Naval

firefighter Scott C. Cornell, son of William E. Cornell of Huntington

Beach and Nadine E. Dosa of Nipomo, and a 2000 graduate of Huntington

Beach High School, recently left on a six-month deployment to the

Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf assigned to the amphibious transport

ship USS Denver.... Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Long D. Vu, son of

Ngoc T. Tran and Xuan V. Vu of Huntington Beach, recently completed

the Navy Nuclear Power Training course at Naval Nuclear Power

Training Unit, Ballston Spa, N.Y. Vu is a 2000 graduate of Edison

High School.
