ANTEATER AQUATICS COMPLEX -- Jeff Powers and Dreason Barry

combined for nine goals to lead the fourth-ranked UC Irvine men’s

water polo team past No. 14 UC Santa Barbara, 11-7, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Saturday on the Anteaters’ campus.

Powers scored five goals and Barry four as UCI improved to 9-4

overall in winning its MPSF opener. Barry scored three times in the

first half and Powers twice as the Anteaters led 6-2 at intermission.

Powers added three second-half goals for UCI, which led 10-3 after

three quarters. Senior goalie Doug Finfrock recorded seven saves for

the Anteaters.

Steve Traverso led UCSB (5-10, 0-2) with three goals, all in the

second half, while Doug Arthur added a pair of goals for the Gauchos.

UCSB goalie Sherwin Kim, a product of Corona del Mar High, had three

saves for the game.

UCI returns to action with a non-conference game at seventh-ranked

Loyola Marymount Thursday at 3 p.m.

The Loyola Marymount matchup serves as a tuneup for Saturday’s

fare at Pepperdine in Malibu, then the Anteaters get ready for the

big one, Oct. 25, when they host No. 1-ranked Stanford in a showdown

of Mountain Pacific powers.

The Oct. 25 “weekend” continues with the appearance of the

University of Southern California on Sunday, Oct. 27, to found out a

blockbuster two-game set for the Anteaters.
