Eagles open tournament with split

The Estancia High boys water polo team split its first two games

of the Estancia Tournament, beating La Quinta, 14-5, in the first

game and losing to Fountain Valley, 17-10, in the second game at

Estancia High Monday.

The Eagles (3-8, 1-2 in the Golden West League) were led by Frank

Gamboa and Jess Hellmich’s four goals apiece. Anthony Hermann and

Matt Metkovich each scored two goals and Chad Kunert and Paul Collier

added solo goals for Estancia in the win.

Nathan Marsteller and Gamboa split time in goal, each making six

saves.

Hellmich scored seven goals for the Eagles in the Fountain Valley

loss, and Collier, Metkovich and Gamboa scored one goal apiece.

Fountain Valley scored a combined 12 goals in the first and fourth

quarters to Estancia’s two goals combined in the first and fourth

quarters.

Estancia hosts crosstown rival Costa Mesa in a Golden West League

match today at 3 p.m.

The Eagles continue in the Estancia Tournament with a

consolation-bracket match Saturday at 11:20 a.m.

Morton, Endrikat take consolation

UC Irvine’s Brian Morton and Jon Endrikat, the 23rd-ranked men’s

doubles team in the country, defeated No. 14 Rameez Junaid and

Rodrigo Minozco of Auburn, 8-4, to win the consolation championship

Sunday at the ITA All-American Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn.

On Saturday, Morton and Endrikat beat No. 29 Ben Stapp and Lee

Walker of Memphis, 8-4, in the semifinals, following victories of

Ryan Haymond and Alastair Jenkin of Texas, 9-8 (2), in Friday’s

quarterfinals and No. 16 David Corrie and Nathan McGregor of

Texas-Arlington, 8-5, in the first round on consolation action

Thursday.

Morton-Endrikat lost in the opening round to Cody Conley and

Octavian Nicodim of Louisville, 8-5.

Magana breaks course record

COSTA MESA -- Vanguard University junior distance-running star

Tony Magana raced to the men’s individual title at the 13th annual

Vanguard Invitational Saturday at the 8,000-meter Fairview Park

course with a time of 26:16, which put him into the VU record books.

Magana’s time beat Vanguard’s prior course-record time (26:43) set

by Robbie Jones at the meet last year.

Magana’s time was 20 seconds more than the course record set by

Point Loma’s Carlos Verez, 25:56 in 2000.

Vanguard’s Mikael Larsson (26:48) finished second behind Magana to

lead the Lions to a tie with Point Loma for first with 40 points.

Point Loma won the meet because its sixth runner finished before

Vanguard’s sixth runner. Saturday’s win was Point Loma’s second men’s

team championship at the VU Invitational, the last coming in 2000.

Lion Matt Meyer finished sixth with 27:36 followed by John Nelson

(15th, 28:45), Edel Lopez (17th, 28:46.36) and Steve Lalim (28:59).

Point Loma had five scoring runners place in the top 11 places to

tie the Lions at 40 points.

Fresno took third with 53 points and the Master’s College finished

fourth with 100 points. Cal Baptist and Chapman University competed,

but did not score as a team.

JUNIOR SAILING

Ford captures Lasers off Lido

Carter Ford took first place with three points to win the Laser

category Sunday in the Halloween Regatta off Lido Isle.

Lido Isle Yacht Club’s Dave Tingler finished second to Ford with

six points.

Newport Harbor Yacht Club sailors finished in first in four of the

eight divisions of the regatta, while LIYC had two first-place

finishers along with Balboa Yacht Club.

The team of Cole Hatton (NHYC) and Lauren Gautschi (LIYC) took

first with four points in the CFJ division and the team of Larry

Walter and Kim Zeulsdorf took first with six points in the Lido

division.

NHYC’s Blake Warner (A Class), Brooks Clark (C3) and Chris

Segerblom (C1) all took first in their respective divisions with

eight, three and five points, respectively.

BYC’s Michael Cefali (B) and Paxton O’Brien (C2) each won their

divisions with six and four points, respectively.

UC Irvine leading tournament

UC Irvine’s men’s golf team is in first place after the opening 18

holes of the Alister McKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club in

Fairfax, Calif., where the second round was cut short because of

darkness Monday.

UCI, ranked 12th in the nation, shot 12-under 272 to lead by one

stroke over USF and two ahead UCLA in the 17-team field.

Anteater senior Mike Lavery is the individual leader at 7-under

64, while senior teammate Ryan Armstrong is in 10th place at 68. Jeff

Coburn (69), Vinnie Poncino (71) and freshman Jay Choe (78) scored

for UCI.

Costa Mesa beats rival Estancia

The Costa Mesa High girls golf team improved to 6-5, 4-1 in the

Golden West League, after beating city rival Estancia, 257-289,

Monday on the front nine (par 35) on the Mesa Linda course at Costa

Mesa Golf & Country Club.

Costa Mesa’s Jean You took medalist honors with a 45. Mesa’s

scorers included Jessica Bunnell (48), Christian Casale (51), Jacklyn

Adams (56) and Rachel Hughes (57). Casale’s 51 was her best round

ever, said Costa Mesa Coach Todd Kolber.

Clarisa Maygren fired a 47 to lead Estancia. Charleen Montebon

tallied a 57, Gwen Reeves shot 60, Sarah Lambert fired a 62 and

Kaylie Gordon finished with a 63 to round out the Eagle scoring.

Costa Mesa battles Ocean View Thursday at 3 p.m. at Meadowlark

Golf Course in Huntington Beach while Estancia, 2-6, 0-5 in league,

hosts Oxford Academy in a nonleague match Thursday at 3:30 p.m. on

the Mesa Linda course.

GIRL SCOUT TRACK

Brombal scores most points

Fifth-grade Girl Scout Sydney Brombal scored the most points (26)

to lead more than 220 first- through fifth-grade Newport Beach Girl

Scouts in the ninth annual Newport Beach Girl Scouts Track and Field

Championships Sunday at Corona del Mar High.

Brombal took first in baseball throw, sprint run and hurdles,

second in the long jump and fourth in the soccer kick.

Claire Ham won the fourth-grade division with firsts in the

baseball throw and sprint run, a second in the hurdles and long jump

and finished fourth in the obstacle course.

Second-grader Jordan Castleton won the sprint run, hurdles and

long jump while finishing fourth in the obstacle course and soccer

kick.
