UC Irvine’s men’s soccer team was a 2-1 winner at Cal State

Northridge in the Big West Conference opener for both teams

Wednesday.

Sophomore Lerato Simelane scored the game-winner in the 58th

minute, his fourth goal of the season, off assists from Scott Bowman

and Dardo Acuna.

UCI broke the scoring ice in the 36th minute when JasonThompson

scored his first goal of the season off an assist by freshman Sean

Iliff.

Northridge struck back to even the count at 1-1 early in the second half, and about 10 minutes later Simelane made his winning

move.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Rossi had six saves for UCI.

The Anteaters, now 6-4-1, 1-0-0 in the Big West, host Cal Poly San

Luis Obispo Saturday in their home season opener, starting at 7 p.m.

Vanguard falls, 2-0

SANTA BARBARA -- Vanguard University’s men’s soccer team dropped a

2-0 Golden State Athletic Conference decision to host Westmont

Wednesday.

Westmont dominated with a 27-11 advantage in shots on goal and led

in corner kicks, 8-3.

Danny Collins and Dana Weymouth scored goals for Westmont.

Collins scored his team-leading 15th goal at the 10:50 mark to

give sixth-ranked Westmont a 1-0 lead.

Weymouth came up with the icer just 30 seconds into the second

half when he slammed home a loose ball.

Vanguard created some chances of its own in the second half,

forcing Jonathan Rinn to make a couple of quality saves to preserve

the shutout, including a diving stop late in the match. The Lions’

Matthew Hess came in as one of the top scorers in the GSAC with 14

goals, but went 0-for-4.

Westmont improved to 9-3-1, 4-0-1 in the GSAC. Vanguard fell to

4-11, 0-5.
