Gentry’s four goals ignite ‘Eaters, 11-7

Junior Garrett Gentry scored four goals and senior Jeff Powers

added three to help lead the second-ranked UC Irvine men’s water polo

team to an 11-7 nonconference victory over host Loyola Marymount in

Los Angeles.

The Anteaters (10-4) jumped out to a 4-1 lead and held a 7-4

advantage at halftime. UCI sophomore Dreason Barry added two goals in

the win and senior goalie Doug Finfrock recorded eight saves.

LMU (8-11), ranked No. 7, was led by Ryan Chapette with three

goals. Kevin Paulsen, the Lions’ goalie, recorded five saves.

Coach Ted Newland’s Anteaters return to action on the road at No.

6 Pepperdine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Saturday at

noon. UCI has defeated the Waves in three previous meetings by a

combined total of four goals this season.

Sailors win, 11-10

Newport Harbor High’s Sailors just did get past host Laguna Beach

Thursday in nonleague boys water polo, squeezing past the Breakers,

11-10.

The two teams battled through three quarters at 11-10, then played

a scoreless fourth quarter.

Harbor, now 11-5 overall, was led by the scoring of Michael Bury

and Nathan Weiner, who had three goals each, and Clay Jorth scored

twice. Single tallies came from Ross Sinclair, Brent Armstrong and

Jay Thompson.

Sinclair had four steals and an assist, and Jorth and Weiner had

two steals apiece. Thompson had two steals and two assists.

Goalie Michael Robinson had seven saves.
