The Laguna Beach High girls’ tennis team ran its Pacific Coast

League win streak to three Tuesday by blanking Tesoro, 18-0, in a

match played at Tesoro.

The Breakers’ No. 1 doubles team of Claire Rietsch and Correy

Miller and the No. 3 tandem of Alex Murrel and Britton Simons didn’t

lose a game, each sweeping their sets 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

It was the second of two PCL victories in five days for Laguna

Beach which blanked Calvary Chapel, 18-0, last Thursday.

In that win, singles player Lorren Butterwick did not drop a game,

winning her three sets by identical 6-0 scores.

The two triumphs puts the Breakers at 3-1 in league play, heading

into Thursday’s key match with unbeaten University (4-0).

Prior to taking on their two PCL foes, Laguna Beach had stepped

out of league play to take on highly-regarded Troy, and the Breakers

suffered a heart-breaking, 10-8 setback.

The Breakers dropped eight of nine singles sets. Rietsch defeated

the Warrior’s Serena Ferman, 6-1, but lost tough matches against

Claire Ferman and Ciobano Cosmino, 7-5 and 6-4, respectively.

Laguna Beach dominated in doubles action, winning seven of nine

sets.

The team of Katie Ochwat and Correy Miller led the way in doubles

as the pair dropped just one game in winning their three sets, 6-0-,

6-0, 6-1.

Jackie Reed and Jessica Murray picked up two doubles victories as

did the team of Murrel and Simons.

Butterwick, who returned to action after being sidelined for two

weeks with a back injury, teamed with Camerin Barron-Sandman for one

set of doubles and the duo posted an easy, 6-0 win.

“The [Troy] match is the first we have been at full strength in a

couple of weeks, due to injury and illness,” Breakers Coach Brian

Ricker said.

In boys’ water polo, Laguna Beach went to Saddleback College last

Saturday to take on Santa Margarita in a nonleague match and emerged

with a 6-3 victory.

The Breakers opened up a 4-1 halftime lead over the Eagles and

maintained the lead throughout the second half.

Tristan Abel and Chris Stansbury each scored two goals to pace

Laguna Beach and Nima Mortazavi and Nic McConnell rounded out the

scoring with one goal apiece.

Hugh Sandys had nine saves in goal for the Breakers who took on

rival Corona del Mar on Wednesday.

In girls’ volleyball, Laguna Beach saw its league record drop to

0-3 in a 15-13, 15-5, 15-10 loss Tuesday to host Calvary Chapel.

Laguna Beach previously had dropped a 15-3, 15-5, 16-14 home league match to Northwood on Oct. 10.

In cross country, Laguna Beach has not run since an Oct. 9 meet

against Northwood, but will return to action Saturday to compete in

one of the county’s high-profile events, the Orange County

Invitational.
