Anteaters shocked at Pepperdine, 6-3

Pepperdine University sophomore Jesse Smith scored four goals,

including three in the decisive third quarter, lifting the No. 6

Waves to a 6-3 upset victory over No. 2 UC Irvine in a Mountain

Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo game Saturday at Malibu.

Pepperdine built a 6-0 lead through three quarters before UCL

showed some spark with two goals by Jeff Powers and a goal by Garrett

Gentry.

The Anteaters were 0-for-23 from the field before Powers found the

range with 4:59 left in the game. Pepperdine improves to 9-5, 4-0 in

the MPSF. UCI falls to 10-5, 1-1.

SOCCER: VU women tie, 0-0

Visiting Biola University outshot the Vanguard University Lions,

22-12, but was forced to settle for a scoreless tie as goalkeeper

Jordan Fredriksen came up with nine saves through regulation and

overtime in a Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer game

Saturday. Vanguard falls to 5-6-3 overall. Both teams are 2-3-1 in

the GSAC.

CREW: OCC sparkles

The Orange Coast College men’s crew finished sixth in the Head of

the Charles Regatta Saturday. Pirates Coach Larry Moore’s crew logged

a 15:53.0, and it was the highest finish OCC has ever had at the

regatta on the Charles River in Boston.

SOCCER: VU men fall

Biola University maintained second place in the Golden State

Athletic Conference with a 5-1 record after a 5-0 GSAC win at

Vanguard Saturday.

The Eagles improved to 11-4-1 overall, and the Lions, who have

lost seven straight, drop to 4-12, 0-6.

Cross country: UCI women fifth

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The UC Irvine women’s cross country team

finished fifth out of 25 schools Saturday in the Chile Pepper Cross

Country Festival hosted by Arkansas, the 10th-ranked team in the

nation which won with 47 points.

Sophomore Kaleena Yee (22:04.01) led UCI with a 22nd-place finish,

while Anteater senior Amanda Armstrong (22:22.56) was 34th in the

field of 192 runners. UCI’s men finished 10th as senior Travis

Morisoli was 48th in 31:33.72.

CC: OCC women win title

SANTA BARBARA -- Orange Coast College’s women’s cross country team

won the Santa Barbara Invitational Saturday morning behind individual

champion Michelle Icban (18:35.4) and runner-up Ava Jones (18:35.8)

as the Pirates finished with 34 points to win easily over their

nearest competitor, Glendale (78).

Roseann Peters (20:05.4) and Sandra Montoya (20:11.8) also had

top-10 finishes for the Pirates, while Natalie Elliott (20:53.4) also

scored.

OCC’s men placed fourth behind David Ojeda (21:35.9), Vidal

Barragan (22:11.9), Mike Casillas (22:22.0), Kohyar Naderi (22:32.2)

and Peter Ramirez (23:13.1). East Los Angeles won with 90 points.

SOCCER: UCI men fall in OT

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo recorded a 3-2 Big West Conference men’s

soccer victory at UC Irvine Saturday.

UCI’s David Yemane and Lerato Simelane scored the game’s first two

goals, but Cal Poly got the winner in overtime on a goal by Andre

Nestle.

UCI falls to 6-5-1, 1-1-0 in the Big West. Cal Poly is 3-9-0,

1-2-0.
