* WESTSIDE REDEVELOPMENT:

Dixon said the city needs to look at the area and consider

mixed-use developments, more single-family homes, some high density

buildings that incorporate innovative residential ideas, a shopping

center with a grocery store that caters to the Westside and an

artists’ village. Dixon promotes mixed-use projects that incorporate

retail on the lower levels and a mix of housing above. She wants to

attract high-quality businesses to bolster the existing businesses

and to promote more “pedestrian friendly” streets with maintained

sidewalks and much landscaping.

* 17TH STREET BEAUTIFICATION:

It is time for the city to apply for beautification grants, Dixon

said. She supports more bus turnouts, synchronized traffic signals,

benches and landscaping on the street. The street should remain four

lanes wide, she says.

* FAIRVIEW PARK:

Dixon would like to see aggressive implementation of the city’s

master plan for the large, rustic Westside park. She wants the city

to fund the amenities at the park, whether through grants or

collaborations with the private sector. Dixon also supports the model

railroad in the park, she said. It is time to move forward on

Fairview Park, Dixon said.

* SKATEBOARD PARK:

After a vote to kill plans for a park on Charle Street, Dixon

said, she was the only council member who actively scouted other

sites and secured a joint study of a skate park at Davis Elementary

by the council and the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. That

proposal has passed.

“My two sons were skateboarders, and I know how important that

sport is to the youth,” Dixon said.
