Anteaters drop to No. 5 in college polo rankings
The UC Irvine men’s water polo team, following a 6-3 loss at
Pepperdine last Saturday, has slipped three places to No. 5 in the
latest American Water Polo Coaches Association Top 20 poll released
Wednesday.
Stanford remains at No. 1, UCLA is second, and California and USC
are tied for third.
Coach Ted Newland’s Anteaters, 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, host Stanford Friday at 6 p.m.
and USC Sunday at noon. Both games will be at the Anteater Aquatics
Complex.

MEN’S SOCCER: UC Irvine, Fullerton endure scoreless standoff
UC Irvine’s men’s soccer team (6-5-2, 1-1-1) are at UC Riverside
Saturday at 1 p.m. trying to improve on its 6-5-2, 1-1-1 Big West
Conference record following Tuesday’s scoreless tie with host Cal
State Fullerton.
Sophomore Cameron Rossi earned his fifth shutout of the season
with 10 saves.

MEN’S SOCCER: Vanguard University clobber Christian Heritage, 7-2
Also on Tuesday, the Vanguard University men’s soccer team earned
its first Golden State Athletic Conference win in dominating fashion
with a 7-2 victory over visiting Christian Heritage.
Vanguard (5-12, 1-6 in conference) built a 5-1 halftime lead and
went on to keep Christian Heritage (5-10-2, 0-7) winless in the GSAC.
The Lions’ Matt Hess and Armando Ortiz scored two goals each,
while Nate Kramer, Matt Hearn and Sean Ganey came up with single
tallies. Ortiz and Freshmen Jarrett Borrego and Andrew Sundseth
earned one assist each. Hess has scored 16 goals this season. The
Lions outshot Christian Heritage, 27-11.
Vanguard returns to GSAC action Saturday at 3:30 p.m., playing at
The Master’s College.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University fall, 3-0
Biola University was a 3-0 Golden State Athletic Conference winner
over host Vanguard University Tuesday in women’s volleyball, 30-24,
30-19, 30-25, dropping the Lions to 7-15, 3-11 in the GSAC. Jen
Geisbauer had 14 kills for Vanguard.
Vanguard hosts Westmont College Friday night at 7.

GOLF: UCI men second in 14-team field at Tillinghast
The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished second in a 14-team field
in The Tillinghast, hosted by St. John’s University at Quaker Ridge
Golf Course in Scarsdale, N.Y.
James Madison won the 36-hole tournament that concluded Wednesday
with a final total of 576, followed by UCI at 584, San Diego at 596
and the host Red Storm with 599 for fourth place.
Andrew Svoboda of St. John’s was the medalist with a 36-hole score
of 1-over 139 after shooting a 71 Wednesday.
UCI’s Mike Lavery finished third at 142 with a final round of 74
and Vinnie Poncino was fourth at 143 after a 71 in the last round.
The Anteaters’ Ryan Armstrong placed 12th at 148 with a 73
Wednesday, Jay Choe shot 75 to finish 23rd at 151 and Jeff Coburn had
an 82 to come in at 52nd place (158).
