Sea Kings tumble, 12-6
The Corona del Mar High girls tennis team lost three tiebreakers
and another set 7-5 as the visiting Dana Hills Dolphins defeated CdM,
12-6, in nonleague action Wednesday.
Dana Hills, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, won three tiebreakers
in the final round, after taking a 7-5 edge in sets after two rounds.
“That’s tough to take,” CdM Coach Andy Stewart said of the lost
tiebreakers, which helped drop his team to 10-3.
“I’m not getting much production out of my three doubles teams,”
added Stewart, whose team, ranked fifth in the county, lost seven of
nine doubles sets.
Taylynn Snyder swept at No. 1 singles for CdM, but the Sea Kings
managed just one other singles set. Dana Hills and CdM are both in
CIF Southern Section Division I and could face each other again in
the playoffs.
The Sea Kings travel to Tesoro today for a Pacific Coast League
match at 3:15 p.m. Senior Anne Yelsey is penciled in to play doubles
(with her sister, freshman Rachel) is her season debut.

TENNIS: Sage Hill wins, 16-2
Sage Hill High Lightning maintained its second place standing in
the Academy League with a 16-2 win over league foe Fairmont in girls
tennis action Wednesday.
Sage Hill, 9-3, 8-2 in the Academy League, and ranked fourth in
CIF Southern Section Division V, got solid performances from its
three singles players. Kellie McKitterick and Kellie Ammerman both
swept their matches and Paige Fullmer won two of three sets for the
Lightning.
Sage Hill’s No. 1 doubles team of Jessica Tsoong and Stephanie
Chen and the No. 2 team of Grace Graham and Rachel Hyler also swept
their three sets against Fairmont, 6-4, 5-5 in league.
Elle White and Laura Webb won two of three sets at No. 3 doubles
for Sage Hill.
Sage Hill has two matches left against Brethren Christian and
Oxford. Brethren Christian has beat the Lightning twice this season.

POLO: Tars belt Laguna Hills
The Newport Harbor High boys water polo team built a 7-0
first-quarter lead and coasted to a 19-6 Sea View League victory over
visiting Laguna Hills Wednesday afternoon.
Newport senior Ross Sinclair scored three of his four goals in the
first quarter, while teammate Michael Bury collected two of his four
goals in the opening period. Charlie Hockenbury (three goals), Brent
Armstrong (two), Jay Thompson (two), Nathan Weiner (two), Clay Jorth
(one) and Brodie Curtis (one) also scored for Newport (13-5, 2-0 in
league).

Costa Mesa High’s boys and girls cross country teams each went 1-1
at a Golden West League tri-meet at Westminster High Wednesday
against Santa Ana and Westminster.
Costa Mesa boys beat Westminster, 16-47, and lost to Santa Ana,
45-15, while the girls beat Westminster, 20-41, and lost to Santa Ana
50-15.
Marco Huipe led Costa Mesa runners with a 16:42 followed by Mario
Herrera (16:46), Stephen Kosnosky (17:42), Tommy Payne (17:48) and
Saul Palomar (17:52).
Mesa’s girls were led by Hanh Nguyen’s 21:39 followed by Ana
Rodriguez (22:11), Kindra Bailey (22:16), Katherine Connell (22:23)
and Cara Doone (22:43).
The Mesa girls are now 4-2 in league while the boys are 2-4.

VOLLEYBALL: CdM rolling in PCL
The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team continued its
winning ways in the Pacific Coast League with a 15-5, 15-6, 15-11
victory over visiting Laguna Beach Wednesday.
CdM improved to 13-6, 6-0 in the PCL, as senior Claire Allen led
with nine kills. Sea King sophomore Lindsey Ensign contributed two
kills.

Newport Harbor High’s No. 1 doubles team of Diana Khoury and A.J.
Olson and the Sailors’ No. 2 team of Krista McIntosh and Bonnie Adams
each swept their matches against visiting Troy, but that’s all the
sets Newport would win.
Troy, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division II, defeated
the Sailors, 12-6, in a nonleague match Wednesday at Newport Harbor
High.
Newport, 9-5, 5-1 in the Sea View League, faces Irvine at Newport
Harbor High today in a Sea View League match.

Tori Girod led the Estancia High Eagles girls volleyball team with
seven kills and 22 digs in the Eagles’ four-game win over visiting
Saddleback Wednesday at Estancia High.
Estancia, 2-12, 2-8 in the Golden West League, beat Saddleback,
15-12, 15-6, 6-15, 16-14. Girod added five aces, two assists and nine
points for the Eagles. Kate Nelson contributed four kills and one dig
and Hillary Larsen finished with seven aces, three kills and 14
points.
“It’s finally coming together for them, they’ve worked hard,” said
Estancia Coach Ruth Laneman.
The Eagles face Orange in a league match Friday at Estancia.

SOCCER: VU women win, 3-0
Vanguard University earned its sixth shutout of the season with a
3-0 victory over visiting Christian Heritage College Wednesday night
in Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer.
The Lions, who were led by the scoring of Bryanna Gonzales,
Janelle Doyle and Jenae Welch, improved to 6-6-3, 3-3-1 in the GSAC.
Goalkeeper Jordan Fredriksen needed just one save to seal her
shutout.

Third-ranked Orange Coast College got 19 kills from Melissa
Zapiain and 12 kills from Krystle Davis in a 30-23, 30-27, 30-26
victory over visiting Cypress Wednesday night in Orange Empire

Elisha Counts dished out 15 assists in the opening game before
handing over the setting duties to Jessica Lippi, who recorded 33
assists and a pair of blocks.
