Sailors rip Sea View League foe Irvine, 15-3
Vanessa Dunlap didn’t lose a game in sweeping her three sets and
Newport Harbor High’s No. 1 doubles team of Diana Khoury and A.J.
Olson only lost three games in sweeping three sets to lead the
Sailors, 8-6, 6-1 in the Sea View League, to a 15-3 girls tennis win
over Irvine at Newport Harbor High Thursday.
Newport’s No. 2 doubles team of freshman Megan McKay and sophomore
Gabby Kay swept its three sets, impressing Newport Coach Fletcher
Olson.
“McKay and Kay sweeping was very nice,” Olson said.
After losing their first sets, Krista McIntosh and Bonnie Adams
both won their final two sets in singles and Newport’s No. 3 doubles
team of Carly Adams and Brittany Sturgess took two of three sets
against the Vaqueros, 0-11.
Newport prepares for a tough week ahead as they travel to play
Laguna Hills Tuesday before playing Corona del Mar, ranked No. 7 in
CIF Division I, Wednesday and hosting Woodbridge, ranked No. 5 in
Division I, Thursday.

TENNIS: Eagles roll, 14-4
Kelly Trettin won her three sets at No. 2 singles and Estancia
High girls tennis No. 1 doubles team of Huong Thai and Kittiya
Sudhikam won three sets to pace the Eagles to a Golden West League
win, 14-4, over Orange at El Camino Park Thursday.
The Eagles finish the season 9-7, 9-3 in the Golden West League,
and can still take second place in league. Costa Mesa won the league
by beating Westminster Thursday.
“Kelly Trettin was our highlight,” said Estancia Coach Rachel de
los Santos. “(Orange’s) No. 1 beat her the last time, 1-6, and she
came back to beat her this time, 6-2.”
Karleen Curran won two of three sets as did Stacie Nellor in
singles for the Eagles.

GOLF: Newport edges Hawks
Newport Harbor High sophomore Katie McKay came through with her
best score of the season, a 48 on par-35, to provide the difference
in the Sailors’ 243-245 girls golf victory over Sea View League foe
Laguna Hills at Laguna Woods Golf Club Thursday.
McKay usually scores as Newport’s No. 5 player. Freshman Natalie
Draganza earned medalist honors, carding a 43, while senior Amanda
Campbell (44), sophomore Kayleigh Horn (53) and Rachael Kone (55)
also contributed for the Sailors.
Newport, which is tied for second in the Sea View, improved to
7-4, 6-2 in league, while Laguna dropped to 3-5 in league.

FIELD HOCKEY: Newport rolls
Newport Harbor High field hockey coach Sharon Wolfe said she
received a total team effort from her squad which defeated Sunset
League host Huntington Beach, 4-0, Thursday.
The Sailors (14-0-4, 8-0-4 in league) earned their 15th shutout
the season, and 10th in league play, as junior goalie Amanda Wittman
recorded two saves and junior Jill Whitfield supported on defense.
Newport scored three of its goals off penalty corners, coming from
seniors Kirsten Chamberlain, Allison Rawlins and Rachel Furman.
Junior Kerrie Gates assisted on Furman’s goal, while senior Kaley
Nix also scored for the Sailors, who received standout performances
from seniors Alyse Vulteen and Megan McHone, Wolfe said.
The Sailors will host Santa Ana Tuesday at Harper Community Center
in Costa Mesa.

TENNIS: CdM wins, 18-0
Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team defeated Tesoro, 18-0, in
a Pacific Coast League match Thursday at Tesoro High in Las Flores.
The win improves the Sea Kings to 11-3, 6-1 in the PCL. Corona is
ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division I. The Sea Kings host
University Tuesday before Back Bay rival Newport Harbor visits CdM
High Wednesday.

HONORS: Dill singled out
Duke University junior Krista Dill was named Atlantic Coast
Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.
The middle blocker out of Newport Harbor High led Duke to three
conference victories last week, including decisions over No. 20
Georgia Tech, Florida State and Clemson.
In the match against the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech, Dill
recorded a match-high .387 hitting percentage with a team-high 15
kills, one solo block and two block assists.
She also led the Blue Devils’ against Florida State, hitting .389
on nine kills and two errors in 18 attempts. Dill had 11 kills, a
.409 hitting percentage and five block assists against Clemson.
