Taryn Kawata finished seventh overall and led the Corona del Mar

High girls cross country team to a first-place finish in the CIF

Division III race at the Mt. San Antonio Cross Country Invitational

Friday in Walnut.

Kawata ran the three-mile course in 20:07 followed by Ahlia

Kattan’s eighth-place finish overall at 20:13, with Jennifer Logan

running in 20:43, Devon Ahearn finishing in 21:06, Melissa Swigert

racing to a 21:15, Keelan Cuyler’s 21:28, which broke a 42-42 tie

between CdM and Presentation, a team from Northern California. Kelly

Artz, younger sister of CdM junior Kevin Artz who also raced Friday,

rounded out the Sea King scoring with a 22:45.

“I’m glad (Cuyler) stayed in because she’s been battling the flu,”

said CdM Coach Bill Sumner.

The Sea King boys finished eighth in Division III Friday with J.C.

Turner and Jack Turner leading the way in 16:44 and 16:47, respectively, followed by Bo Weidner’s 16:59, Kevin Artz’s 17:29 and

Danny Quinlan’s 17:30.

Also at Mt. SAC:

* Diana Rosete followed up her win at last weekend’s Orange County

Championships with a first-place finish in the girls individual

sweepstakes race for Division III.

Rosete ran to an 18:25, leading Estancia High’s girls to a 14th

place finish out of 25 teams.

On the boys’ side, Eagle senior Humberto Rojas took third in the

individual sweepstakes race in 15:18 in what Estancia Coach Charlie

Appell said were “muddy conditions.” Estancia’s boys placed fourth in

Division III (209 points) with Alex Cahuantzi running in 16:29

followed by Aaron Van Geem (16:39), Panfilo Elias (16:40), Matt Zich

(16:46), Abel Flores (17:09) and Geraldo Orozco (17:39).

Estancia girls had 372 points. Crystal Rincon ran in 21:33

followed by Lucy Leon (22:33), Fatima Carrasco (22:40), Brittany

Starn (22:42) and Areli Flores (23:04).

* Sage Hill runners turned in solid efforts. Among the endeavors:

Nick Gross was 30th on the freshman level at 19:33; Tyler Derheim

went 22:24 on the sophomore level; and the varsity was sixth overall

in Division V, keyed by the runs of Zach Chandy (24th at 17:58),

Chris Chiboucas (28th at 18:07) and Tim Lefler (43rd at 18:37).

Kelsey Rose was Sage Hills’ top runner in the girls competition in

25.01.

VOLLEYBALL: Mesa rolls

Costa Mesa High girls volleyball team swept host Orange Friday in

a Golden West League match, 15-0, 15-0, 15-7, to improve to 9-2

overall and stay undefeated in league at 8-0. Orange falls to 3-8,

2-6 in league.

Sharon Day led the Mustangs with 12 kills and Emily Abbott added

eight kills. Jenny Sparks led Mesa with 15 assists.

* Orange Coast was an easy winner in Orange Empire Conference

play Friday evening, belting visiting Irvine Valley to the tune of

30-21, 30-27, 30-18.

“This was by far our fastest start, our strongest push through the

middle and our strongest finish against one of the best teams in the

conference” said a happy Coach Chuck Cutenese.

Melissa Zapiain led all with 15 kills and eight digs, Elisha

Counts dished out 23 assists and Jessica Lippi had 14 kills and two blocks. Melissa Sherman and Jessica Lingo each had eight digs for

Coast.

The Pirates (12-0, 6-0 in the OEC), are at Saddleback Wednesday.

* Westmont College used just 67 minutes to sweep host Vanguard

University in Golden State Athletic Conference women’s play, rolling

to a 30-23, 30-24, 30-11 victory. Sonrisa Peace was Vanguard’s kill

leader with six.

Westmont improves to 16-5, 8-5 in the GSAC. Vanguard falls to

7-16, 3-12.

SOCCER: OCC women romp

Orange Coast College sophomore Jaycee Mahler extended her school

career record for goals by scoring the first two in the Pirates’ 5-1

Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer victory Friday at Santa Ana.

Mahler, who scored 33 goals her freshman season, now has 52 at

OCC, which improved to 14-1-2, 10-1-1 in conference.

Nikki Saenz also scored twice, while Sarah Ronquillo rounded out

the scoring for the winners. Saenz and Ronquillo also added assists,

as did Alicia Santiago and Vanessa Rocha

POLO: OCC men ‘split’

Orange Coast College’s men meet Miramar today at 11 a.m. in the

Saddleback College Water Polo Tournament following a 13-6 loss to Mt.

San Antonio College, and a 5-0 forfeit victory over Santa Ana in pool

play Friday.

POLO: Sailors fall, 10-7

El Toro High’s Chargers were 10-7 nonleague winners over host

Newport Harbor in boys water polo Friday, dropping Newport to 13-6

overall.

Michael Bury led Newport’s scoring with three goals. Ross Sinclair

scored twice and Nathan Weiner and Brent Armstrong each scored a

goal.

The Sailors, 2-0 in the Sea View League, are at Foothill on

Wednesday.

POLO: Eagles win, 17-12

The duo of Frank Gamboa and Jess Hellmich combined for 16 of the

Estancia High boys water polo team’s 17 goals Friday as the Eagles,

6-10, 2-3 in the Golden West League, defeated host Loara High, 17-12,

in a nonleague match.

Gamboa and Hellmich both scored eight goals and Paul Collier added

one goal. Eagle goalkeeper Nathan Marsteller made 16 saves.

Loara’ Chris Zamora scored four goals and three players scored two

goals each for the Saxons of the Empire League.
