THE PLACE

Avila’s El Ranchito, 2101 Pomona Ave., Costa Mesa

THE JUDGE

Lolita Harper, Costa Mesa reporter

THE MEAL

Quesadilla Cuernavaca, which consisted of a large flour tortilla,

filled with melted jack cheese, Ortega chiles and tomatillo salsa;

chips, salsa and guacamole and a Diet Coke.

SPEED

South-of-the-border-style eateries are famous for a laid-back

attitude that makes you feel perfectly at home while enjoying rich

food. Avila’s El Ranchito encompasses this warmth but recognizes the

time crunch of the routine lunch hour. Seating at the restaurant --

outside or in -- is quick, servers are prompt and the food is served

piping hot.

THE SERVICE

The waitress was attentive, friendly and accurate and always

smiling. She was there when you needed something -- an extra place

setting or napkin -- but not overbearing. She kept a watchful eye on

empty glasses, salsa bowls and chip baskets throughout the entire

visit.

THE VERDICT

Three words: Mmmm, Mmmm and Mmmm.

My quesadilla was browned to perfection, creating a pocket for the

delicious fillings that was neither too soggy or too crisp. The

cheese was melted completely and left a scrumptious, gooey trail from

my plate to my fork. It was filled with just the right amount of

chiles to add a spicy compliment. Topped with Avila’s unparalleled

guacamole -- made from thick chunks of ripe avocados and fresh pico

de gallo -- it was absolutely mouthwatering. The quesadilla was a

mere $6.95 and the drink about $1.50, for a great meal for under $10.
