UCI soccer player ends hospital stay

The sixth and final UC Irvine mens’ soccer player hospitalized

after a traffic collision Saturday was released from the hospital

Tuesday, said Bob Olson, assistant athletic director of

communications.

The players were on their way to a game in Riverside when their

van collided with another vehicle, causing it to tip onto its side on

the Corona del Mar Freeway connector to the northbound Costa Mesa

Freeway in Costa Mesa.

Several of the injured players may be able to play in today’s game

against UC Santa Barbara, Olson said.

DUI checkpoints will be set up Friday

The Costa Mesa and Newport Beach police departments each plan to

set up a DUI checkpoint Friday night along Newport Boulevard.

The Costa Mesa Police Department will join with the California

Highway Patrol to conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Newport Boulevard

from about 9 p.m. Friday until about 2 a.m. Saturday.

The Newport Beach Police Department will conduct a sobriety

checkpoint from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday on Newport Boulevard

at Finley Street.

Police said that particular location was chosen because of the

number of DUI-related accidents or arrests there.

The checkpoint will be clearly marked and vehicles will be

randomly selected to move through the check lanes.

Newport Beach Police officers will also hand motorists a brochure

on driving while intoxicated.

Officials said the goal of such checkpoints is to educate and

increase public awareness about the dangers of driving under the

influence of alcohol or drugs and to discourage motorists from doing

so.
