No one injured in Costa Mesa fire

Nobody was injured in a fire that broke out in the living room of

a home in the 200 block of Wilson Street on Wednesday evening, Costa

Mesa Fire officials said.

Firefighters initially believed the call that came in at 5:45 p.m.

involved people who were trapped inside a burning house, Costa Mesa

Fire Battalion Chief Chris Riley said. But the two elderly women and

one man in the house managed to escape, he said.

“We extinguished the fire in less than 10 minutes,” Riley said.

“The damage [from the fire] was limited to the living room area. But

there is smoke damage throughout the house.”

Several neighbors gathered around to observe the scene. Esperanza

Garcia, who lives nearby, said she saw the fire as she was driving

home from work.

“I was shocked,” she said. “I’ve never seen anything like it

here.”

An estimated damage was unknown Wednesday night.

Bank robbed after bomb threat

A robber got away with an undisclosed amount of money from a Far

East National Bank branch in the 4600 block of Jamboree Road on

Wednesday, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman said.

A man believed to be in his 70s walked into the Newport Beach bank

with a large satchel, approached a teller and passed a note demanding

money, Shulman said.

“He then told the teller he had a bomb,” Shulman said.

The man then took the money and was seen driving away in a light

blue compact, he said.

The suspect is described as a white man about 5 feet 5 inches tall

and 140 pounds, balding, wearing prescription eyeglasses and wearing

a gray sweater and dark blue pants.

The man, also said to have had a large, white mustache, was

reportedly seen at the same bank a few days ago, Shulman said.

Anybody with information is asked to call the Newport Beach Police

Department at (949) 644-3681.
