Pegasus student nominated for award

Marissa Meyer, an eighth-grade student at the Pegasus School, has

been nominated for a Junior Philanthropist of the Year award. Marissa

was recognized for her efforts in raising money and books for a

library in Kiryat Malichi, Israel, an Orange County sister city.

Besides playing tennis, the 13-year-old has also helped to

establish two children’s libraries for Human Options, a nonprofit

agency that gives shelter to battered women and children. She’s also

started her own foundation, Marissa’s Libraries, to create children’s

libraries.

Marissa is now focusing her attention on helping Heritage House, a

rehabilitation center for mothers and their children.

Extended kindergarten program offered

The Huntington Beach City School District will begin offering an

extended kindergarten program.

Hands-on learning will be part of the curriculum for children who

were too young to attend regular kindergarten last September, but who

will be 5 years old by Jan. 27.

The curriculum is based on a variety of factors and activities

that will develop children’s self-esteem and a positive attitude

toward learning.

The program will be held at Kettler School, 8750 Dorsett Dr.

Classes will start at 8:40 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Lunch is available

at a cost of $2 per day. Children can also bring a lunch and parents

must provide transportation.

Registration forms are available at elementary schools and will be

accepted through Nov. 13. Proof of child’s age, up to date

immunization records, health exam records and proof of residency must

be provided.

If demand for the program exceeds space, a lottery will be held to

determine placement.
