Hatfield, Paulino lead the pack

It was the sixth-graders turn to take the spotlight at last week’s

Ocean View School District cross-country championships held at

Huntington Central Park, and it was Dawn Hatfield and Blake Paulino

who first crossed the finish line.

Hatfield, who runs for Vista View, won the sixth-grade girls event

in a time of 9:10.

Paulino, also of Vista View, was neck-and-neck with Marine View’s

Nathan Prime in the boys’ division and each finished the race in a

time of 8:33. But Paulino leaned in at the finish line at the right

time, and was awarded first place.

Hatfield won the girls’ race by holding off the pursuit of Spring

View’s Elvi Delgado, who ran a 9:15.

Rounding out the girls’ top five were Mesa View’s Hayley Lytle in

third place at 9:18, Marine View’s Brittany Irvin in fourth at 9:21,

and Vista View’s Brianna Ramsey in fifth, also at 9:21. Irvin edged

out Ramsey for fourth.

Marine View placed all five of its runners in the Top 10.

Vista View’s Jordan Gorman followed Prime in third place in the

boys’ final standings with a time of 8:44. Mesa View’s Fumito

Yamaguchi (9:01) and Ryan McKenney (9:09) finished fourth and fifth,

respectively.

The sixth-grade boys’ race was a near-even affair, as Marine View

captured four Top 10 ribbons and Vista View and Mesa View each won

three.

Competition also took place at the seventh- and eighth-grade

levels. Mesa View, which won the seventh-grade boys and eighth-grade

girls events, captured the overall district title for the second

consecutive year.

Seventh-grade girls

Erica Congelliere, Christina Badajos and Kaley Swain each placed

in the Top 10 as Marine View won the district championship to cap an

undefeated season.

Spring View’s Clarissa Holz won the individual championship with a

time of 9:01. The Mesa View duo of Katie Welch and Ramie Masters

finished second and third, respectively.

Seventh-grade boys

Raul Torres of Vista View, who ran an 8:01, edged out Marine

View’s Celso Arcos (8:02) to capture the individual title.

Mesa View won the division by taking five of the Top 10 spots, led

by fifth place finisher Josh Smith. The win capped an undefeated

season for the Eagles.

Eighth-grade girls

Kristin Thuve of Mesa View ran an 8:39 to win her second

consecutive district title and helped lead the Eagles to the division

crown.

Teammate Briana Littrell placed second, Spring View’s Heidi

Holdway and Brianna Smith were third and fourth, respectively, and

Mesa View’s Caprice Thompson was fifth.

Eighth-grade boys

The division featured the most balanced race of district

competition.

Mesa View entered the finals with dual meet wins over their three

district rivals, but Vista View was able to avenge a single-point

loss to the Eagles during the regular season to capture the district

title.

Marine View’s Joey De Leon finished an undefeated season by

winning the event in 8:08. Mesa View’s Ted Hennes and Ryan Shillito

were second and fifth, respectively, Vista View’s Tyler Petry placed

third, and Luis Pavia of Spring View ran to a fourth place finish.
