Paul Lee Hummel, a former Newport Beach City Council member and

longtime Corona del Mar resident, died Thursday of congestive heart

failure. He was 79.

Hummel served as a member of the Planning Commission and the City

Council in the late 1970s. Former mayor Evelyn Hart, who served with

him on the City Council for four years, remembered Hummel as a man

“dedicated to his causes.”

“He was most concerned about excessive growth in the city and

keeping neighbor- hoods safe for families,” she said.

Former City Atty. and current Councilman Dennis O’Neil said he

remembers Hummel as a good citizen who represented the city and his

community of Corona del Mar well.

“He was a council member at a turning point in the history of

Newport Beach,” he said. “Caltrans was planning to put a freeway

through the city. It was an important time in our history.”

Hummel was also a retired U.S. Navy captain.

He is survived by his children Cheryl, Craig, Glen and Dore;

son-in-law Mark Rhyme and five grandchildren. Interment is expected

to be with full military honors at Ft. Rosecrans Military Cemetery at

Point Loma in San Diego. Funeral arrangements are pending.
