1Get dressed up. The Masquerade Ball for the Arts, an annual

Halloween gala for young professionals with proceeds benefiting the

Orange County Museum of Art, will be held from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at

the museum, 850 San Clemente Drive, Newport Beach. The theme this

2Smart laughs. Steve Martin’s “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” will be

performed through Nov. 17 at the Costa Mesa Civic Playhouse, 661

Hamilton Ave., Costa Mesa. The play sets up a fictional meeting

between Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein in a Parisian cafe.

Performances will be 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with

3Jazz it up. “Portraits from the Golden Age of Jazz,” a series of

photographs by William Gottlieb, will be on display at the Orange

County Museum of Art’s Satellite Gallery through Dec. 29. Gottlieb

photographed the jazz scene in the 1930s and ‘40s. Hours are 10 a.m.

to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11

a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The gallery is at South Coast Plaza, 3333

TUESDAY

4Get violet. “The Violet Hour,” a new play by Richard Greenberg,

will start in previews Tuesday at the Julianne Argyros Stage, South

Coast Repertory, 655 Town Center Drive. The play, which tells the

story of a fledgling book publisher torn between publishing his

mistress’ autobiography and his best friend’s book, will open its

regular run Friday. It closes Nov. 24. Performances will be given at

7:45 p.m. Tuesday though Sunday, with weekend matinees at 2 p.m. $19

5See the light. The Orange County Museum of Art will present

“Light Screens: The Leaded Glass of Frank Lloyd Wright” through Jan.

5 at 850 San Clemente Drive, Newport Beach. Museum hours are from 11

a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. $5 for adults, $4 for seniors

and students, and free for members and children younger than 16.
