CdM exam: pass ... fail
There will be nothing secondary about the play of the Corona del
Mar High defensive backs when the Sea Kings visit Calvary Chapel for
a football showdown of Pacific Coast League unbeatens tonight at 7 at
Westminster High.
Calvary Chapel (4-3, 2-0 in league) comes in with the most
productive passing attack in Orange County, paced by 6-foot-4,
225-pound senior quarterback Terry Mermer. Mermer’s passing yardage
this fall (2,274) is more than 700 greater than the total posted by
the CdM offense, rushing and passing.
CdM cornerbacks Mordy Ornguze, a junior and Wess Presson, a
sophomore, as well as senior safety K.C. Rawlins, will be on the
front line of the attack, hoping to help the Sea Kings (4-3, 2-0)
retain at least a share of the league lead.
The Sea Kings have given up an average of 131 passing yards in
seven games and have been victimized by six touchdown passes. Calvary
Chapel has averaged 325 yards per game via the pass and Mermer has
thrown for 21 TDs.
The CdM offense has produced more than two-thirds of its yards on
the ground, paced by senior tailback Mark Cianciulli, who is 153
yards away from his second straight 1,000-yard campaign.
