Sunday Sports gets a boost in a big way

Good things continue to mount for Daily Pilot Sports. I would

presume, since you’re reading this, you’ve found these pages as the

“B” section of the Pilot, something that hasn’t happened for many

years.

Beginning today the Sports on Sundays will come in this format,

with expanded space and a continued emphasis on “Locals Only.”

We found our way back to Sundays in February of 2001, and finally

came back to the Anteaters at UC Irvine last fall.

That’s a long way from where we were during the dark ages when the

Daily Pilot went from a seven-days-a-week daily to six, then the

horrible threes in ’93 before bouncing back to five days a week, then

six days a week, and now back to every day, with a “B” section on

Sundays, as well as the customary Thursdays and Saturdays.

Having been here at the Daily Pilot since January of 1968, I’ve

seen many transformations, and the continued upgrading since the

Times purchased the paper and began inserting it within its Orange

County edition, has obviously been the trigger to the current meteor

on Bay Street.

Something else has been happening in Sports.

Maybe you’ve noticed the mountain of material for AYSO Region 97

every Thursday.

It would be nice to take a bow for the humungous flow of

information, but in fact, it’s because of one dedicated mom, Pam

Garrett.

She’s like a lot of youth moms who help us, except she sends us

mountains, rather than the mole hills we sometimes obtain from

others.

If you’re wondering why Region 97 is so favored, and you’re not,

the solution is rather simple. Just put on a Pam Garrett hat and

you’ll be surprised what will come forth.

Every mom and dad who produces material on the youth level is most

appreciated. And I wouldn’t think of demanding the emulation of Pam

Garrett. but, boy, what a gem! Coverage of AYSO Region 97, I believe,

has to be unparalleled. If there’s better coverage from any daily

paper on the planet, I’d sure like to see it.

There’s only so much room for material, usually, but when

mountains flow, it forces the issue and more space is demanded.

So, between Pam Garrett in the grass roots area, and a publisher

who loves sports (he believes he’s a golfer, I think), the tools are

supplied.

The upshot is that what we have can still be improved, and with

help, it will.

Check out UCI men’s hoops this upcoming season. You’ll be

surprised to see who’s courtside in Norman, Okla., and Provo, Utah,

among other sites.
