Tars open T of C Tuesday

The Newport Harbor High field hockey team (16-0-4, 10-0-4 in the

Sunset League) will open the Tournament of Champions Tuesday against

visiting Marina, 3 p.m. at the Harper Community Center.

The Sailors, seeded No. 2 behind Sunset League champion Edison

(11-0-3 in league), defeated Marina Thursday, 3-0. Harbor handled

Marina, 8-0, in their first league meeting.

If victorious Tuesday, Newport would advance to meet the

Huntington Beach-Santa Ana winner in a semifinal Thursday.

The championship game is scheduled Nov. 9 at noon at Pleasant View

School in Huntington Beach. The third-place game precedes the final

at 10 a.m.

Newport Harbor has been to the title game the last two seasons,

losing each time to Marina, 1-0, in overtime.

The Tournament of Champions is the only postseason tournament for

the non-CIF-sanctioned sport, in which 11 section schools compete.
