Residents, lone pole hold out on Little Balboa Island

Two households are the reason that just one utility pole remains

standing on Little Balboa Island. City officials may consider taking

legal action to persuade at least one household to hook up to

underground utilities connections.

Of the 23 stations in Newport Beach where boaters supposedly can

empty their vessels’ sewage tanks, only about 13 are in operation. A

city committee next month will consider citations and other ways to

encourage operators to keep the pump-out stations in working order.

Councilman Steve Bromberg met with Mormon church leaders to talk

about some of the feelings of the neighbors of the proposed Mormon

temple. Calling the Planning Commission approval of the temple a

“tainted victory,” Bromberg encouraged church leaders to work a

harder to appease some residents.

Greenlight candidate Madelene Arakelian alleged that council

members Tod Ridgeway and Gary Adams have a conflict of interest

because they vote on the union contracts of the police and

firefighters who endorsed them. Adams and Ridgeway said the

endorsements are appropriate.
