Avila is Edison’s end-zone specialist

Andy Avila’s ability to run the field was one big reason why the

Edison High Chargers were able to pick up an important Sunset League

victory last Friday.

The senior running back scored the game’s first three touchdowns

and finished with four overall in helping lead Edison to a 41-0

victory over the Vikings.

It was the defending co-champion’s first league win after two

losses.

Avila, the Independent’s Player of the Week, punched in two

first-quarter scores and reached the end zone in each of the second

and third quarters.

His first touchdown came when he teamed with quarterback Tommy

Grady on a 26-yard pass play.

Two of the other three came on runs covering 64 and 29 yards, his

fourth touchdown coming from three yards out.

In addition, Avila had another touchdown nullified by penalty.

“Andy played another solid game in the backfield,” Edison coach

Dave White said. “He ran really, really well for us.”

Avila averaged a little more than 10 yards per carry and finished

as the game’s leading rusher with 174 yards on 16 carries.
