Stanford beckons Bergeson to Hall of Fame
PALO ALTO -- Olympic gold medalists, NCAA champions and one of
the greatest coaches in school history comprise Stanford University’s
Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2002, which will be honored with
induction tonight and displayed on Saturday at halftime of the
USC-Stanford football game.
Among the 10-member class of ’02 is Newport Harbor High water polo
product James Bergeson, who went on to become a four-time
All-American at Stanford.
Bergeson, along with Newport Beach residents Wendi (Rush)
Humphreys and Ceci (Hopp) St. Geme, joins a list of Dan Goldie
(tennis), Coach George Haines (swimming), Jon Louis (gymnastics), Jon
Root (volleyball), Ed Sprague (baseball), Katy Steding (basketball)
and Roger Stillwell (football).
St. Geme and Humphreys were chronicled in Thursday’s edition of
the Daily Pilot.
“We are very proud of the accomplishments of the Hall of Fame
Class of ‘02,” said Stanford Athletic Director Ted Leland. “This
diverse group of former student-athletes is a great representation of
the history of Stanford Athletics. Their achievements made them
natural choices for induction in the Stanford Hall of Fame.”
Bergeson, a Daily Pilot Sports Hall of Fame selection, helped lead
Stanford to two NCAA championships, a second place and a third place
in his four seasons. He was a member of the silver-medalist 1988 U.S.
Olympic team and is Stanford’s all-time leading scorer with 235
goals.
When at Newport Harbor he led the Sailors to back-to-back CIF
Division 4-A championships.
Bergeson, along with wife Fran and three daughters, reside in Dove
Canyon.
