OCC women sock it to Hancock, 84-58

Freshman forward Alisa Carrillo hit 9 of 12 shots for a game-high

20 points in her collegiate debut to help Orange Coast to an 84-56

victory over Allan Hancock in the opening round of the OCC Tip-Off

Tournament Friday night.

The victory sends the Pirates into tonight’s semifinals against

2002 state runner-up San Joaquin Delta tonight at 7:30.

The Pirates appeared comfortable through, jumping to a 20-9

advantage mid way through the first half. Liz Mendoza hit a pair of

three-point shots.

Carrillo sparkled throughout, but wasted no time making her

presence felt in the OCC lineup. She hit on 5-of-7 in the first half,

and grabbed three offensive rebounds. Nancy Hatsushi had five of her

game-high seven assists before the break as the Pirates held a 46-32

cushion.

Delta was an 81-56 winner over Antelope Valley, and Mt. San

Antonio and Moorpark were first-round winners, as Riverside and

Solano absorbed 63-50 and 51-36 losses, respectively.

POLO: Coast rallies, 7-6

Orange Coast College’s women’s water polo team rallied from a 4-0

halftime deficit to pull out a 7-6 first-round victory in the

Southern California Championships at Cypress College.

Nicole Sonnenfeld and Courtney Robertson each scored twice to pace

the Pirates, who improved to 25-8.

Cuesta scored with 33 seconds left to cut OCC’s lead to one goal,

but Coast held on for the victory, sending the Pirates into today’s

10:45 a.m. semifinal against Golden West, a 17-0 winner over Fullerton.

The winner meets he Long Beach-Riverside semifinal winner at 3:45

p.m. for the championship.

SOCCER: OCC rolls, 8-2

The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team closed out its

regular season with an 8-2 Orange Empire Conference victory over

visiting rival Golden West Friday.

The Pirates (19-1-2, 14-1-1 in the OEC) built a 3-0 halftime lead

and coasted to the win. Freshman Sarah Ronquillo scored three goals,

while sophomore Nikki Saenz netted two and freshman Melissa

Mangrello, freshman Vanessa Rocha and sophomore Amber Blake

contributed one each.

Rocha also delivered three assists, while sophomore Fernanda

Velasco served up two and freshman Jessica Bertoni and sophomore

Bianka Gratzer added one each. OCC sophomore goalkeeper Heather

Metcalf recorded three saves, and the Golden West keepers combined

for 15 saves.

The Pirates, who finished second in the OEC, advance to the

Southern California Regionals and will most likely begin with a home

game Nov. 19. The seeding meeting for the playoffs will take place

Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL: OCC sweeps

Orange Coast College’s women’s volleyball team took its act on the

road and swept at Riverside City College Friday night, posting a

30-19, 30-22, 30-20 victory to improve to 15-1, 9-1 in the Orange

Empire Conference.

Melissa Zapiain led the Pirates with 14 kills and Krystle Davis

had 12 kills, while Elisha Counts picked up 39 assists. Also in the

mix were Casey Petersen and Christine Ryan, each with seven kills,

which had Coach Chuck Cutenese in a good frame of mind.

“We had a good attacking game,” said Cutenese, who will send his

team against invading Golden West Wednesday night. The Pirates

handled Golden West in the first round of OEC play in four games.

Riverside fell to 6-7, 4-6 in the OEC.

HOOPS: Lions win, 68-64

Vanguard University’s women’s basketball team was a 68-64 winner

over Cumberland University of Tennessee in the first round of the

2002 Mr. Gatti’s Invitational Tournament at Pikeville, Ky. Friday.

The Lions had four players in double figures -- Jennifer Wilcox

and Cecillia Josefsson with 13 points apiece, Robbin Dittenbir (11)

and Deborah Candelaria (10). Wilcox (9) and Dittenbir (8) were

Vanguard’s board leaders.
